The night smells so great

I love it. I'm a night owl and I don't like the sun but, my god, the night right now is gorgeous. It's warm enough to sit out in a t shirt and every flower and bush in my garden is giving off fragrance.

I don't know if it's the time of year or the heat but it's absolutely glorious tonight. I love moon bathing 🌙🌸

Anyone else?

I love it too! So warm where I am. I’m about to go and sit out for a bit before bed.

vanillachoc · 27/05/2026 00:00

I love it mostly because it’s gone down to 19 degrees and I am sitting comfortably in my living room, feeling cool for the first time in days. My bedroom is west-facing so it’s absolute torture in the heat!

WallaceinAnderland · 27/05/2026 00:01

I've been reading my kindle in the garden. It's beautiful out there. I feel for all those people that miss this time of day (night?) because they have to be off to bed.

I live it too but watch out for the mozzies I got bitten last night! Inspired me to risk it though!

apeaceful2026 · 27/05/2026 00:02

I opened my front door earlier to put something in the bin and the smell was amazing, like being abroad. I love the smell of a warm night! Unfortunately my back garden is full of mosquitos so can't sit out in it, but just nice to get a whiff of it! :)

BertieBotts · 27/05/2026 00:03

Yes!! I love being outside when it's dark. And I love living somewhere that is fragrant at night.

IndigoBluey · 27/05/2026 00:03

Me too, a night owl, enjoying the calm and the smells from the flowers. Also looking forward to wakening up with the breeze through the windows tomorrow, that’s felt very nice this week

WallaceinAnderland · 27/05/2026 00:19

The aroma at night is so different to the day. The heat of the day makes it too sharp and bright to be enjoyable but at night, it is cool and soft.

I just have ordinary plants like honeysuckle, roses, wisteria, lupins, tulips, the usual english garden stuff but it smells like perfume all around me.

The fragrance is gorgeous.

In one area of the garden last night it smelt almost antiseptic but tonight, in a different area, it's like perfume. I'm glad others are experiencing this because I expect the majority do not.

It's so lovely. I watched the last two episodes of Falling near our gorgeous smelling Rosa Regosa with the moon in the still blue sky at 10pm last night

EmeraldRoulette · 27/05/2026 00:48

@WallaceinAnderland your post has made me feel very nostalgic

My parents used to have lots of lovely smelling flowers in the garden. But something I particularly remember is walking home with my boyfriend in the middle of the night, I was about 17, and we walked past lots of people's front gardens that smelled absolutely amazing.

I think most of those have been paved over or no one's planting scented flowers? Sadly as a singleton, I would not want to go for a wander here at night now. And where I lived in London, we just had none of that. I planted some on my balcony but that's not the same.

There's a communal garden in my block of flats now (I'm back in my childhood area) but we haven't got anything that smells amazing at the moment. I did mean to sort that out a couple of weeks ago but...life.

Unfortunately, it's just really stiflingly hot here so I've been out there, but I didn't get that really nice feeling that you should get when you're in the garden at night.

I used to dream of the kind of garden I would plant! Sadly, I don't think a house in the garden is on the cards for me.

Is it too late to plant something nice and scented in the garden?

Newmeagain · 27/05/2026 00:51

i love it too. I grew up in a hot climate so love this even if it is a bit sticky!

WallaceinAnderland · 27/05/2026 01:12

@EmeraldRoulette no I don't think it's ever too late. I don't even go in the garden during the day at the moment. It's way too hot for me. DH walks around in the morning watering everything and we sit out for dinner in the evening about 8pm when the sun is kinder.

We have some cheese and wine and do a crossword or something. We read and chat. The sun goes down, the scent comes out and it's absolute bliss.

We don't get many nights like this in england so I make the most of them. At this time of year the birds are loud in the daytime, the broken eggshells of their young lie on the ground, the insects are everywhere, busy and buzzing but at night, it all stops. Once the owls have settled down after dusk, it's quiet and calm and perfumed. And that's the time I love the most.

Right now it's so strong all around me. I can't name it but I'm familiar with the scent. It 's soapy and flowery and fragrant. I don't know what it is but it's just so overwhelming and lovely. I never smell this in the daytime, it's only after dark.

EmeraldRoulette · 27/05/2026 01:26

@WallaceinAnderland soapy, I wonder what that could be

I like the scented stocks, jasmine, and heliotrope.

I do also really like chatty birds during the day. Also in mating season when they're really loud at night, I like that.

We don't seem to get owls flying over this block! At least I've not heard one while I've been living here. I absolutely love hearing owls 🥰

WallaceinAnderland · 27/05/2026 01:50

Soapy, I don't know. Next time I get that scented soap I'll have to take a look at the label and see if it throws anything up.

It's quite a soft scent, but the floral aroma is a much stronger perfume. I think I'm getting the antiseptic scent from the lavender and maybe chamomile.

I just love the mix. Nature has a way of making everything smell great.

Our owls are hooting until about midnight and then they settle down.

Worst time of year for me as a night owl at night, as there is no night. The entre UK is too far north to enter full night.

I don't mind the smell I suppose, but it along with the brighter sky mostly just reminds me the day and sun is coming back and has no true end for a few months. I spend the entire period never resting properly or switching off.

DuchessedOrleans · 27/05/2026 04:50

I’m more of a dawn person, just been outside with a cup of tea. Beautifully cool breeze in my nightie😅

The garden smells lovely at this time of day too…

Mysticguru · 27/05/2026 05:48

Make sure you're moon bathing on the 31st it's a full blue moon

WallaceinAnderland · 27/05/2026 12:57

Ooh thanks @Mysticguru I will

It's beautiful. I've had a couple of bats flying around too.

WallaceinAnderland · 27/05/2026 14:34

We used to have a bat but I haven't seen him so far this year. I'm looking forward to tonight although we have a tiny chance of rain but even that brings it's own pleasures after such a dry spell. And the garden would welcome it.

I love it too OP. Yesterday I really noticed all the different moths that visit the plants at night.

I've specifically planted the border outside my bedroom with scented plants so that I can lie in bed and enjoy them. Roses, tobacco plants, honeysuckle, sweet peas, phlox and night scented stock.

One of the reasons I love camping is the scent of the night - there's a particular kind of soil/grass/green smell I associate with being outside my tent in the evening.

Gardeningsideeffects · 27/05/2026 14:42

I agree with that, but I'm a morning person, and my word, where I live smells incredible at 4am when I've been walking the dogs this week.

I can't breathe deeply enough. I walk around a farm and also down by a river. Absolutely exceptional.

Well I suppose I am a morning person too in that case as I am still up at 4am. I just count it as night as I haven't gone to bed yet. I guess I am a dusk to dawn person, probably a bat in a past life.
