Hip replacement surgery if you have varicose veins.

Posting here for traffic. Just interested to know whether anyone has had or been accepted for hip replacement surgery when they have varicose veins? I have a cluster of them behind my knee,on the affected side. They don't hurt at all, indeed I only noticed them because the skin behind my knee felt a bit bumpy. It goes down when I've been resting, only swells when I've been walking or standing. I'm asking because I am hoping to be accepted for the operation in the not too distant future, but am worried this might affect my chances. There's no AIBU,by the way,I didn't know how to remove the voting thing!

I've got a very long and bumpy varicose vein running from my thigh to my calf and I had a total hip replacement nearly 2 years ago. It was never commented on by any medical staff but I was on blood thinners and had to wear compression stockings for some time after surgery, presumably to lessen the risk of DVT. If you're worried about it I would ask your consultant.

Two hip replacement ops a few years ago. Marvellous collection of VV. No mention by anyone at any point! Full recovery re hips, all good.

That's good to hear! I was worried that I'd be refused the operation because of them.

I'm on blood thinners too because I had a pulmonary embolism 8 years ago. The consultant I saw a couple of weeks ago said that if I DID have the operation,I would have to be more closely monitored.

That’s fair enough re thinners.
I think we are all required to go on them for 3-5 days (can’t remember) so no need to panic. Monitoring is always good.
