I don't want to go out

I really don't want to go out.we have been at home since Friday. I really can't stand being out in the heat. But my children keep asking to go out. And I feel guilty for staying home. I don't drive so have to walk /public transport. So its not even like I can have air con. And the thought of walking I this heat feels awful. The heat has stolen any energy I did have. I did think cinema because I have vouchers plus I can go by train. But theres nothing on for their age its either to young ir to old.

Don't even know why im posting this, not like anyone can turn down the heat.

I feel the same. Climbing the walls here but it's too hot outside for us.

hexsnidgett · 26/05/2026 11:28

Yes. This kind of heat traps me inside, but sadly have got to go to work later.
It might be cool enough to go to the park this evening, your dc might enjoy the novelty.
Bit of a stretch I know.

smallglassbottle · 26/05/2026 11:29

Can't you just take them to an outdoor space for a little walk? I wouldn't be going on the train. Do you have any woods near you? Do they have any water blasters they can play with?

Shinyhappyapple · 26/05/2026 11:29

I don’t know where you live but where I am it gets a bit cooler tomorrow- so maybe plan something for then? Have you got a local leisure centre with swimming pool ?

Meadowfinch · 26/05/2026 11:30

You could go out early - 6am - walk along a canal, have breakfast somewhere and home before it gets too hot.

Or wait until 6pm when it is cooler and then take them swimming. How do you normally cope with summer?

Really you just need sun block, cool, loose cotton clothing, a hat and plenty of water to drink. I ran a charity 10k yesterday and once we got going, it really wasn't all that bad.

Favouritefruits · 26/05/2026 11:31

Have you got an indoor pool local? We went to a water park yesterday and it was so refreshing and lovely it kept me cool long after we had finished too!

WhatNoRaisins · 26/05/2026 11:35

I think my problem is if I walk any kind of distance in this heat I will need to shower and change my clothes at the destination to be in a fit state for anything.

Thecomfortador · 26/05/2026 11:36

We went to the park I think after 7pm yesterday evening, it was just right temperature wise. But completely understand it's too hot to move. Personally I think doing a 10k in this heat is foolish.

Dryshampoofordays · 26/05/2026 11:38

any Riverbanks or lidos near you? Woodland walk? Paddling pool and waterbombs in the garden? You can’t hide from the sun just slap on sun cream, wear an hat and have an ice lolly.

Saladcreamormayo · 26/05/2026 11:40

do you have a paddling pool you can put in the garden for the dc then you can easily retreat indoors if it gets too much. dc will be entertained. used to work great when mine were younger.

The train would have only been for cinema.

There isn't anywhere close to walk. Its a 20 min walk to the park. But theres no shade to walk in. 20 mins there 20 mins back in this heat feels like hell.

I feel your pain. I have an injury atm that means I'm on crutches and can't drive. The kids are climbing the walls but I physically can't take them anywhere. I got DH to set up the paddling pool in the garden for them before he left for work, which they were briefly excited about but they only lasted half an hour before they got bored. It's going to be a long week.

It may have to be that. Its really the only way to avoid the heat. I don't melt and they get out for a couple of hours.

We've done some early mornings at a local park. It's the least worst option.

Iwanttobeafraser · 26/05/2026 11:50

You haven't been out all weekend? I do sympathise but I think that's crazy if you have young children. Do you have a garden? Are you at least in the garden, perhaps with hose pipes or paddling pools etc?

Is there a local pool near you - I think it's worth the effort to go there. If you're near a train station, I'd consider taking the train somewhere you can actually get air con if you like! I was in London yesterday and popping in and out of shops and restaurants it was actually quite cool!

Or go out early/ late. In this heat, I'd be getting down to the park earlt in the morning or late in the afternoon, ice lollies in hand.

MrsMoastyToasty · 26/05/2026 11:52

Can you treat yourself to a taxi to the cinema/swimming baths/whatever? Most cars have air conditioning, and if they don't you can open the windows.

It's not at all with the right precautions. My first half marathon was on the hottest day of the year, you just have to know how to adjust your speed and listen to your body.

Sadless · 26/05/2026 11:56

Sounds awful but I am staying in with mine . It’s awful out there and this heat makes mine bad tempered so not doing it . They can wait till it cools down

Put the pool up! If you are staying inside then it doesn't matter if the pool takes up space!

YoBetty · 26/05/2026 12:30

We were awake earlier than usual this morning, and by 6.30 the streets were alive with loads of people walking their dogs and other folk jogging etc.

It does matter. It over takes the garden to much. Time it's up theres only about 5ft between the pool and fence. It also takes a day and a half to fill. I don't mind so much in the 6 weeks holiday because its a longer holiday.

How old are your DCs?

I don’t tend to force mine out during the hottest parts of the day as no one enjoys it.

I used to go out early morning and then for a shorter time in the evening but now I usually just go out in the evening as they’re older.

There are fun things they can do indoors and going out is just typically for exercise and fresh air.

If you are going out then perhaps somewhere like the woods where it’s cooler.

youalright · 26/05/2026 13:38

We went for a walk and nipped in the park about 6.30 this morning loads of people about then we come home and played in the paddling pool for a bit but I've made them come inside now as its to hot. We might go out in the evening when its cooler

sprigatito · 26/05/2026 13:41

You can get a small paddling pool on Amazon for a few quid, it might be a worthwhile investment.

I think you do need to find a way to get them out of the house for a few hours. Going early or late sounds sensible. You’ll all go bonkers if you’re trapped in four walls for days. And they need to exercise and see other kids.
