I need to replace the grey ones. I have some from Next but they go grey very quickly.

Buy from a hotel supplier, I like Richard Haworth.

You'll pay far less for much better quality, mine are 4 years old and look/feel brand new.

White bath towels shouldn’t be going grey if you are putting them in an all white wash.

We have had John Lewis Egyptian cotton white bath sheets for decades. The current set are in their 6th year, still bright white and fluffy. They replaced a previous set that we'd had for over 20 years - they wore through but were still bright white!

How are you washing them? I don't think the brand matters, it's whether they are washed with other colours/with the right detergent.

OhGoshNotAgain · 25/05/2026 15:39

The greying is about how you wash them, not how cheap they are. I have some lovely white hand towels I bought ten years ago from Ikea for £1.50 each, and they are still bright white because I wash them only with other whites, on 50C using bio laundry wash, and pop in a Glowhite sachet.

Screamingabdabz · 25/05/2026 15:50

Yep it’s the wash. I have cheap Asda towels I’ve had for years and they are still bright white.

Only wash with whites.
High temp.
Biological powder (or pods etc).

dobbymin · 25/05/2026 15:55

I only wash in a white wash up up 60 degrees. Not sure why they are going grey?

Washing white anything sounds like far too much hassle. Get coloured ones.

Omhaf · 25/05/2026 16:14

I bought mine from Dunelm. Wash them in a 100% white wash (usually just sheets and towels) with bio wash at 30. Occasionally wash at 60 with non bio. Still brilliantly white.

Are you tumble drying with black jeans or something? Do your other whites stay white?

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 25/05/2026 16:25

@dobbymin Some just do. A bit cheap
maybe? My White Company ones are just not that white after 28 years. Bought when we bully our ensuite bathroom 28 years ago. More recently, my M&S ones are still perfect. Like you, I wash at 60 or even 90. Machine gets a good wash through to remove any clogged detergent. Ws use detergent for whites. Use whitening extra add in if you need to. Once grey, it’s difficult to resurrect them though.

Are you using liquid or powder?

KrazyKatty · 25/05/2026 18:31

I use Aldi or Lidl Biological washing powder with some oxi-action powder added to the drawer for all my whites. I never use liquid detergent as I don’t think it works as well and it never gets good reviews compared to the washing powders.

I also put a sachet of Vamoosh washing machine cleaning product into the machine on a 90° wash every time I wash any pet bedding. (The dog has his own sofa and throws)

This gives the washing machine a good clean out.

tiramisugelato · 25/05/2026 18:34

I’ve got towels that are 30 years old and still white as the day we got them.

I’d say you must be washing them wrong.

HScully · 25/05/2026 18:36

They need to go in a completely white wash. Anything with a coloured trim however small will make things gray. So I was white with a bit of colour seperate

Twasasurprise · 25/05/2026 18:39

60 degrees bio powder, no softener, all white towels. Never had mine turn grey.

BertieBotts · 27/05/2026 16:38

Maybe you are retaining bits of dye in the remnants of the previous wash? Try draining the filter before you do a whites wash, then run a quick rinse and spin on cold and the slowest speed just to rinse some clean water through.

As others have said, I only wash whites with whites and usually throw a glowite satchet in the load. But apparently, Milton is good so I'll be giving that a try as an alternative soon.

Sgtmajormummy · 27/05/2026 17:18

Do you live in an area of high limescale in the water? That can leave a waxy scum on your clothes and whites can turn grey.
Calgon or white vinegar in the wash can help break it down.

JillThePlantKiller · 27/05/2026 17:50

Mine are from Primark and some of them are 15 years old. Washed separately with a laundry powder, oxiaction and a vinegar rinse. Still perfectly white.

Are you using fabric softener? Or possibly too much detergent that isn’t rinsing through?

Poppy61 · 27/05/2026 20:51

My cheap Tesco hand towels have gone grey, the expensive John Lewis ones have not. Both washed exactly the same.
