If your dc want to be in the paddling pool all day, how are you keeping them protected?

They’re covered in factor 50, also a tshirt and sun hat. We don’t have shade near the paddling pool and I don’t have anything to create any (I tried a big bed sheet and it wasn’t big enough).

I let them have an hour and have brought them in to have drinks and stay in the shade inside.

How long would you wait before letting them out again and any suggestions on creating some shade over the pool?

Reapply sun cream constantly, the uv rash vests swimsuits, little breaks here and there , hat etc. just like we would on holiday. Can you get a parasol for the garden?

Can you get a cheap gazebo?

Tableforjoan · 25/05/2026 11:53

Get a parasol or a beach tent they tend to have good uv. Lidl normally around this time start selling sun canopies for camping really but again Uv and come with poles and ropes that can go over well.

Anyway just every so often they come in for cream to be reapplied make it the same time as an ice pole or something helps keep the excitement about the pool at bay briefly. Gives time to soak in as well.

Parasol?

RobertBobsee · 25/05/2026 12:02

When it was a teeny pool, sun tent thing. When it was a larger pool we bought a gazebo with two side panels you could put in any side meaning we could shade them.

As my son was platinum blonde he and his brother were in those long sleeved factor 50 UV rash vests with a hat on too.

Thank you. It’s on a patio so not sure a gazebo would work, but I will look into it as love the idea!

Long sleeved long leg uv suits with hat with a legionnaire hat

You could get one of those big cantilever parasols that will cover it completely, they're not cheap though. Also, I highly recommend (assuming you're in the uk) Boots Soltan Once for kids, they can be in the water for 3 hours before it needs re-applying.

I will look into those too, thank you!

We have a gazebo over our garden seats on the patio, it works well.
When mine were little I used staple an old sheet to the fence then peg it to the washing line with the paddling pool underneath. That garden was tiny though, a king sized sheet covered most of it!

We have a small garden with high walls, so our garden is almost entirely covered with sail shades at the moment to keep the paddling pool and sandpit in shade. If we couldn't tie them to trees/hook them onto the wall, I'd get a gazebo - if it's going to be like the last couple of summers, there will be a lot of hot, sunny days.

umbrella over pool, plus uv shirt on and sun hat. Plus your normal sun cream etc.

On hot days i generally try and keep him inside after lunch a few hours during peak sun also. Ie 8-12 ourside, 12-3/4pm inside or outside under full shade elsewhere. Then back outside 4-8.30pm
