Just read this in the DM. I'm a bit shocked tbh. It's a lot of money. I wonder what he spent it on. There was a camper van mentioned ages ago but they don't cost that much. Honestly these folk.

She says she didn’t and she has been found guilty of nothing. But of course court of public opinion mumsnetters will know better.

i find it hard to believe that an intelligent woman didn’t at least question why they had the funds to spend £9k on watches, new cars, £3k on a dressing table..etc.

Was it for the family home or a flat?

I don’t know. There’s a huge list of items: electronic gadgets, £3k coffee machine, £4K fountain pen. Even if some could have been legitimately purchased from the salary he earned his spending seem excessive and yet his wife was seemingly unaware.

Agreed! If my Dh had embezzled £400k and invested it in the stock market then it’s believable that I could be unaware, but when the money has been used to purchase a camper van etc where did she think this money suddenly appeared from?

You'd think they'd have learned from the Lufthansa heist in Goodfellas but no!

The magic money tree of course. Labour as one so chances are the SNP have one too. Talk about hear no evil see no......La la la fingers in ears.

If he goes on to admit that while it was only him doing the actual crime, his wife knew about it, she’s going to be charged with what?

Some sort of failing to report a crime charge?

Not sure about Scottish law but here I think it would just be a case of misconduct in a public office? If they couldn’t prove she used the money for her own benefit. Although if you can do this indirectly as a spouse I’m not sure.

xino · 25/05/2026 14:25

If Nicola Sturgeon wasn’t complicit (hard to believe) then she’s clearly as thick as a plank. And this incredibly dim woman led a country. How so many people idolised her is scary.

GardenCovent · 25/05/2026 14:28

How strange this trial wasn’t heard 3 weeks ago.
And how strange his wife claims she knew nothing about it.
This could be the plot of her friend Val’s next novel

There's a couple of threads on Scotsnet on this.

Meanwhile Nicola Sturgeon has issued a statement.

https://www.scotsman.com/news/politics/nicola-sturgeon-says-she-was-misled-just-as-others-were-by-peter-murrell-8639512

"I am angry, hurt, sad and very distressed about the actions on family, friends and the SNP...

“To be deceived and let down by a husband I loved and trusted has caused me acute pain.
“Why he acted as he did is, and always will be, beyond my comprehension.
“To be clear: I had no knowledge or suspicion whatsoever that he was using SNP funds for personal purposes

“That I was fully cleared after a thorough investigation underlines that these are not my crimes. I was misled just as others were......

“I need to remain focussed on recovering from that and building a new phase of life.

“I will be making no further comment".

And also posted this on social media this morning

Living her best life obvs.

"Not my crimes". I've heard that phrase before somewhere

Edited

'Building a new phase of life' / 'not my crimes'.
Aye, right. Appearing at a Book Festival near me shortly to flog: 'Frankly'. Hope she is boo'ed.

GasPanic · 25/05/2026 14:30

All seems a bit low budget and tawdry to me.

While your world class despot aspires to a 747 with a jacuzzi with gold plated taps, our politicians seem to make do with campervans and an xbox.

I hope it was worth it.

TirednessOnToast · 25/05/2026 14:34

And, aye, the timing of this Trial was Vey Convenient for the SNP. Tres Convenient as Nicolas French pal might say. Particularly bad that it was members of rhe public whod been sending hard earned cash in for 'Independence'. Corrupt as anything the SNP.

I am in Scotland and am aware that there has been a culture 9f secrecy in the SNP for years. See 'Wheesht for Indy'. SNP MSPs (used to know one pretty well) have to toe rhe Party Line at all times. Its a small group who have had power for 19 years & counting. NS & PM marriage was widely held to be ine of convenience (at least in some Edinburgh circles) yet they did still share a modest home. What could possibly go wrong ? (& who could possibly be totally unaware?)
Apologies for typos - app playing up ...

Multiple coffee machines and fountain pens. They can't all have been in their house, surely?

XDownwiththissortofthingX · 25/05/2026 13:31

IIRC this was during Covid, and the story was that the motorhome was purchased on behalf of the SNP so that campaigning could continue in a limited way without contravening Covid restrictions.

The cars, I believe there was also a Jaguar at some point later traded-in, would obviously at least prompt discussions between most couples, but again, if you have a joint income of 200k or thereabouts, I don't think the purchase of a vehicle is, in isolation, the sort of thing that is going to prompt one spouse to suspect the other must somehow be obtaining funds illegally. Owning/buying cars is a pretty common and typical expense for people earning that sort of salary.

Maybe . But 4k on a fountain pen, 3k on a dressing table, make up & jewellery (for PM?)

Exactly.
Hard to believe she didn’t question any of this. You would at least wonder if your dh was getting into debt to make all these purchases..and surely ask some questions.

DM has the story behind their pay wall for some reason which is a bit annoying. They are doing this more and more recently, fine when it's silly puff articles but annoying when it's current news articles.

Anyway, there's no way Nicola didn't know what was going on and I will be amazed if she gets away with this completely.

I thought she was great during Covid when Johnson was floundering around. Now she's just going to be remembered for being married to/in cahoots with a dodgy fella who was ripping people off.

She wasn’t great during Covid, she used those press briefings to curry favor for herself and her incompetent party which sent old people with Covid into care homes. She is a vile piece of work, just like her crook of a husband in their Lavender marriage

Wee Nippy allegedly has a love nest…that would need bits and pieces

FurzeMinister · 25/05/2026 14:53

Do not forget the Lalique salt and pepper grinders (£2,600)!! One could be forgiven for thinking that a true Scottish patriot would at least have bought those second-hand.

And the Fortnum & Mason advent calendars (£200) - surely Scottish Home Stores make a version?

TirednessOnToast · 25/05/2026 14:43

Put it in context.

£400,000 or so over a 12 year period, and again, a couple with a relatively high joint income. I don't think it necessarily follows that any sort of spend on frivolous or non-essential purchases is immediately going to spark suspicion. As alluded to, my Ex was never off Amazon, constantly ordering homeware from John Lewis, spending a fortune on personal beauty treatments and so on, I never once thought to myself "Oh my, they must be embezzling from their employer".

People seem to think Nicola Sturgeon must have had nothing better to do than sit at home scrutinising receipts for her then husbands spending, which is bizarre because I don't know of a single normal relationship where that's par for the course.

Even with the biggie, the motorhome, people are still questioning why this didn't prompt questions from her. Clearly these questions are being asked in ignorance, because even Murrell, as stupid as he is, didn't think he could simply spend 125k on a motorhome without piquing curiosity. He falsified documentation which lent credence to his claim that this was a party asset, so no, there's no reason for NS to question the appearance of a motorhome, because Murrell had already taken steps to account for it beforehand.

What makes you think she is intelligent? She actively attempted to demolish women’s rights in Scotland, she appears to think that men can become women, she wanted to saw the bottom of fire doors in schools etc during Covid, she made a complete arse of herself over a man who dresses as a woman who raped two women and she allowed men to been held in women’s prisons . I’m so glad she was told her fortune regarding that fact recently.

Lalgarh · 25/05/2026 14:57

There was a woman who murdered both her parents to spend on their credit cards. When they looked at what she spent it on it was just random shit like dresses from the local high street. Except thousands of pounds in total

Shelleyblueeyes · 25/05/2026 14:59

The campervan alone cost £125k
Imagine him coming home from work and saying I'm buying us a campervan - without the next question to your HUSBAND being oh yes and how are WE paying for that?
Rubbish she knew nothing.
