Do you think you get BO?

I’m think I’m clean and don’t smell. But am I deluded? I wear clean clothes each day so a fresh dress or top, clothes that have been properly laundered and aired as I cannot bear the sour fusty smell.

i get a shower every day and use strong deodorant (sure max). I’m sure I don’t smell but how would I know. My friends and colleagues don’t smell to me either. But occasionally I come across incredibly smelly people including BO, fusty clothes, cats and the odd smell of a larger body or the smell of someone who never changes.

I also had a colleague who didn’t usually smell on a hot day asking for deodorant as she said she “stinks”. I never use deodorant unless after a shower and don’t use perfume or body spray to cover up smells.

I don’t for any of the so any of this to avoid BO but as a way to keep fresh and clean. My husband is the nicest smelling person.

a long distance coach driver told me of a sorry of a colleague who he did a Europe trip with who slept in his clothes and didn’t showers. But that is a low bar. And we had a temp in at work who was very large and smelt unbearable but not of sweaty BO?

on the balance of probability I don’ t smell but how would I know?

Yes I did yesterday after painting a wall in the evening. And to add to it I stank of drain as we had a blocked drain that needed dealing with and even after cleaning up after that I still stank. I think hot weather conditions bo different to everyday bo though.

Mydogisagentleman · 25/05/2026 08:17

I don't think I do.
I shower at least once a day, occasionally twice.
I don't wear man-made fibre. Am in 35 degrees heat at the moment and have showered and walked the dog. Will probably have another one once I get home from shopping

Screamingabdabz · 25/05/2026 08:18

I think you’ll be fine. You launder properly and use a good deodorant. I think the fact that you’re sensitive to it means you’d know.

Using soap on your armpits will make you smell again later. I’ve only used emollient wash for years now

bananaapplepears · 25/05/2026 08:23

It takes a lot for me to have BO. I don't wear deodorant on working from home days and I don't smell after the gym or runs. DH never smells ever. I think some peope have this thing that means they never smell. Thats him.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 25/05/2026 08:24

Generally no (even at the gym weirdly) so i did experiment with not using antiperspirant, and realised that occasionally yes i do smell (the office and shops), so i always wear antiperspirant if Im leaving the house. Obvs shower daily.

Perfume is to add a nice smell, not to mask an unpleasant one.

redboxerclub · 25/05/2026 08:25

Very occasionally I used to smell onion or cumin if I had a curry and it was gross! Never happens using sure max.

You probably don't smell. You wear clean clothes and wash.
It's mostly people who re-wear clothes (looking at you, men at parkrun who think they can get two wears from an outdoor running top) and don't wash who smell.

There's also a difference between an end of hot day slightly sweaty smell and BO.

Tillow4ever · 25/05/2026 08:31

I never used to but since Peri hit I’ve noticed I get so much sweatier and there’s definitely an odour to the armpit areas of my shirts when I remove them. I hate it! I’ve tried so many different soaps and shower gels (but have very dry skin so need to consider that too) and pretty much every deodorant going. I’m using the Sure Maximum Protection these days which helps more than any others I’ve tried. I even tried those wipes that stop you sweating!

VivaciousCurrentBun · 25/05/2026 08:34

I don’t use any form of deodorant and I know I do not smell at all I don’t perspire at all due to the ABCC11 gene variation common in people of East Asian descent,

Copied this from online ‘The ABCC11 Gene: This gene dictates how molecules are transported across your cell membranes. A specific mutation causes a "loss of function" that affects two types of apocrine (sweat and wax) glands’.

I also get the very dry earwax wax. It means I can get very hot too easily and also my ears have had impacted wax. Those are the downside. Ever noticed how loads of East Asians stay out of the sun and wear hats? Part of it is being tanned is seen as lower class, field worker status but also those people are not sweating so much so do not want to get too hot.

During perimenopause I was sometimes having to change tops twice a day and could only wear natural fibres…I was showering twice a day as well….something hormonal was going on, it also gave me a superpower of other people smelling weird…

it’s settled down now in menopause.

my DH never smells, it’s frankly freaky.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 25/05/2026 08:39

No, I never really have though. The only time I had a BO smell was when I was really ill with sepsis and it affected my kidneys, it made me smell like ammonia.
Otherwise not at all, with the usual wash and deodorant.

tiramisugelato · 25/05/2026 08:42

I do on busy days at work - but I’m a dog walker and am outside and active for 5-6 hours normally.

MammaTo · 25/05/2026 08:45

My sweat smells really bad if I don’t take precautions. I use an antibacterial soap and wipe my underarms with glycolic acid 2-3 times a week. I then use roll on and a spray anti perspirant.

Octavia64 · 25/05/2026 08:56

Most people will smell of BO if they sweat enough and don’t wash quite quickly after.

going to the gym is a classic for this.

in addition hormones can either boost or reduce BO so teenagers going through puberty often develop BO and need to shower much more than they did as kids,

I personally found peri meant I smelt more aswell.

everyone is generally nose blind to their own smell so most people are not particularly aware of it. Obviously there are exceptions.

in general if you are showering every day, using deodorant and showering after sweaty exercise you’ll be ok

Iliketulips · 25/05/2026 08:58

I don't think I get really bad BO, I do e order occasionally if I get hot if I'm giving off a scent. Funnily enough though, I discussed this with DH as he said someone on the bus smelt awful When I said the above though, he told me I don't smell even when hot.

Pureclass · 25/05/2026 09:34

I also have the non sweat gene and I never smell, I've even been in hospital for 2 weeks with only very sloppy bed baths and still didnt smell at all - according to DH.

I think with most people who smell it comes from their clothes.

Gym/technical fabrics are the worst and can really hang on to smells unless washed at a higher temperature. Which we are all told now to avoid doing. But smells get trapped in there.

I do rewear clothes and wont wash something until its actually dirty, but I air it well before it's put back in the wardrobe.

I will also pretreat laundry, DH shirts get a good scrub under the arms so any deodorant stains are gone and smells cant reattach (im not a 50s housewife I do laundry he does the bathrooms)

Food and cooking smells that are left to fester are also gross. I know I struggled with this when I lived in a studio flat, it was really hard to keep clothes smelling fresh and try and cook. Using the oven was just out for me as it just took over the whole flat.

thequeenstoes2 · 25/05/2026 09:41

They say that fresh sweat doesn’t smell itself but it brings out the smell of unwashed body/bacteria. Not sure if that’s rubbish or not.

I worked with a man once who stank. It would fill a room and linger after he’d gone for ages. He was completely nose blind to it and used to actually comment on how bad other people smelled! Also worked with a lady who appear very clean and smart but does definitely smell of something on a hot day - not sure if that was a cleanliness or hormonal issue.

The amount of people who I walk by in the supermarket who just reek of BO, unwashed body, musty clothes, urine and general filth is mental
though, I don’t know how they can’t smell it on themselves or in their homes.

Yesterday it got to about 4pm before I had a bath (had only been sat in the garden) and by that point I definitely felt gross and sweaty but i don’t think I’d have been noticeably smelly to someone else.

LateDecember · 25/05/2026 10:13

If someone doesn't bathe and use deodorant/anti perspirant then yes, they are deluded to think they don't stink. Just because someone can't smell themselves doesn't mean others can't smell.

BeeGneiss · 26/05/2026 04:02

I get BO sometimes and once I get it it lingers for days! I went for a run and stank for 4 days after, despite showering twice a day.
I would say if you can't smell yourself you are probably fine.

Magpie50 · 26/05/2026 04:29

If you are that worried find a brutally honest friend or family member to ask!😄
I don't think I usually smell of BO but I probably will this morning as it'll be after a 12 hrs shift in a heatwave!
Tbh though I don't think clean sweat smells bad anyways. It's those people who either don't wash daily or put sweaty clothes back on that are going to get rank!

violetcuriosity · 26/05/2026 06:52

You would definitely know. I was seriously ill earlier this year and when I came out of hospital I absolutely stunk of BO every morning, despite showering before bed. I don’t know what it was, possibly stress, steroids, all the different high strength medication I had been given in the hospital?? Some mornings I actually smelt like someone who hadn’t washed in days, I couldn’t sleep due to the steroids so was often in the shower by 5am.
