Red pin prick spots on baby’s arm

Just posting for some advice on whether I should be concerned. I’ve called 111 but won’t get a call back for a couple of hours, so just looking for some reassurance in the meantime.

14month old baby woke up with red pinprick spots on one arm. The spots aren’t raised. Over the past hour or so I think they are turning more purple and becoming slightly more blotchy, and when I put a glass over the spots they don’t seem to fade. He doesn’t have a fever or seem otherwise unwell (except he has been sleeping awfully over the past few days which is very unusual for him but could just be the heat).

when I google this meningitis keeps coming up but I’m hoping that’s unlikely given that he seems otherwise ok

a&e for non-blanching rash like this.

I expect it's nothing sinister but baby needs to be checked out immediately.

Straight to A&E. When DD had those symptoms, luckily GP surgery open and they agreed to check her over immediately. She was referred straight to hospital. Turned out to be nothing to be worried about, but she was in hospital all day for monitoring, and obviously she was in the best place for care.

Probably heat rash or something viral if they've been unwell, BUT nonblanching rash - A&E

Thanks all, on our way to a&e now!

Hope all is ok.

Just to reassure you, they are usually very unwell by the time the rash appears in meningitis. The a&e doctor told me recently.

Thanks, that’s good to know. He had meningitis when he was 3 weeks old but there were no symptoms other than a high temp. Hopefully it’s nothing serious this time!

How's things OP?

Crunchiemunchie · 25/05/2026 20:48

Thanks for checking in. The rash spread a bit when he was in hospital but they did bloods and didn’t find any sign of infection or illness. Because he seemed otherwise well they sent us home and just said to keep an eye on him and to come back if he gets unwell or the rash gets significantly worse. So will be checking it tomorrow morning! They were baffled by it though and couldn’t really explain what might have caused it

My DS was already in hospital by the time his meningitis rash appeared. He was so, so sick. Took the rash about 6 hours post admission to appear.

Hope your wee one is ok and it’s the heat.

Oh I’m sorry about your little one. My son had meningitis when he was a few weeks old and it’s so horrible.

yes my husband was wondering if it’s the heat. Not sure how the heat would cause these pinprick spots, but hopefully it’s something as simple as the that
