Relocating to Scotland

hi MN (not sure where I was supposed to post this one) but once again I’ve been thinking a lot again about relocating. I currently live down south it’s very expensive rent ect I’ve been thinking of moving up north more so to Scotland. I have family up there and the rent is so much cheaper. I’ve found lovely cottages up there with land for only a small amount more than what I pay in the south for a smaller property.

my question is anyone that has relocated such a long distance how did it go? Do you regret it? Are you glad and how did you go about viewing properties as it’s not like I can just pop over for context we are about a 9/10 possibly even 11 hour drive from the highlands.

thanks for reading again.

As an addition to my last post.. no regrets but it is a different lifestyle. And it has taken time to adjust. My kids love it. I love it most of the time but occasionally miss the English weather (maybe not the heatwaves though) and I suppose I feel very English here and that can be odd sometimes. I’ve never had anything but welcome though.

I made this move! I've never EVER regretted it Op. In fact, you couldn't pay me to move back to England.

My kids were 4 & 5 at the time (it was 2003). We initially moved to Livingston, but later on we came to Dalgety Bay, which is a seaside town in Fife. Best of both worlds here - cheaper houses, but just a 20 minute train journey takes you into Edinburgh. We have 2 good Primary schools, and the High school is going to be replaced with a state of the art multi million pound school on the banks of the river Forth - plans look amazing. We've got 5 lovely beaches, and I can see the sea from my windows and garden. Love it!

Ignore people who moan about the weather - it's a common misconception that Scotland is cold. It was 30 degrees on my decking yesterday and so hot we had to have the parasol up.

Schools are good. Crime is lower. I could leave my door unlocked if I wanted to. Hospitals are infinitely better than in England. The people are super friendly. Prescriptions are free. University is free! Both my kids went to Uni - one to Edinburgh and one to Aberdeen - both got degrees and now have professional jobs. The only thing we had to pay for was board and food. The degrees were free!

Whilst the Highlands are beautiful, I would personally choose Fife, as you get all the best bits, but you're still close to Edinburgh, which is stunning. Lots if things there for kids, like museums, the fringe festival etc. Loads of bars and restaurants.

Shh! You’ll have them all here! 😀

Sorry, I disagree! Our summers have been glorious for as long as I can remember. I've just been putting the cushions out in the garden, and my temperature gauge is reading 30 degrees - it's only 947am!

niknakw12 · 25/05/2026 10:01

@Blondiebeachbabe also in Dalgety Bay after moving here from East Lothian 😁
I'd recommend Fife too, close to Edinburgh, Stirling, Glasgow , the airport and motorway to travel down south.
Highlands are nice for a visit but not sure I could live there.

Scottish education and healthcare are definitely not great in comparison to the rest of the UK.

The weather is very much dependent on where you live. But I find the lack of daylight in winter worse than the weather!

Are you saying with a straight face that Scotland doesn’t have long and bitter winters, chilly and often cold spring and a mild summer intercepted with odd hot day. Seriously?

Hassell · 25/05/2026 10:39

I have family in Scotland and I visit at least twice a day. Once in early spring and once in July.

and I pack for a south winter. The cold gets in to my bones. And I literally get off the plane in London and marvel at the absence of…. Chill

You don't even live here, and you know better than me, who...does...actually ...live...here? Wild.

While some of this is true, some of it isn't so much. Both education and the NHS are creaking at the seams and our potholes, unfortunately, can rival England's. And it definitely wasn't 30C in all areas yesterday.

OP, make you've done your homework before committing especially with regard to accommodation and work.

It really does depend where you are in Scotland but it is generally cooler than the UK. Your temperature gauge must be in the sun! Which it is not supposed to be for an accurate measure. The maximum anywhere in Scotland is forecast to get today is 25 degrees as opposed to the maximum forecast in England of 34 degrees.
Central rural Aberdeenshire is pretty cold in winter and we certainly don’t have a need for snow poles on the roads anywhere in England.
But Scotland is wonderful and I will be up there in a week.

MrThorpeHazell · 25/05/2026 11:34

My SIL relocated from Kent to Argyllshire. She got a wonderful detached place in exchange for a fairly standard 4 bed semi and she loves it BUT:
(a) her heating is oil fuel which, as you can imagine is fairly eye-watering price-wise now.
(b) any serious medical treatment involves a major trip into Glasgow.
(c) If the ferry stops running the reasonably short trip into the city becomes a major road trip of 80+ miles.
That aside, she's having a lovely time.

Your deck must be quite a sun trap cause I’m 3 miles away from you and it didn’t get above 21C in Dunfermline

It’s nice today but it’s not that temp 3 miles away. 🤣 sitting in my Scottish garden too.

Happymountains · 25/05/2026 11:51

Most Scottish people would think long and hard about a move to the highlands - then probably not move. Weather, remoteness, jobs, transport, cost of living are all factors for a young family to consider.

It's somewhat of a suntrap, I do admit. South facing garden and the sun is beating down on the decking. I guess the temp thing could be faulty, but it certainly feels ROASTING!

She sounds remote. Central belt, you would not have any of these issues! No different to England here.

er, hello? Scotland is PART of the UK (UK = United Kingdom for anyone who mistakenly thinks UK = England).

how embarrassing! 😳
