Earlier, I heard the Cuckoo.
This evening I have robin, blue tits, coal tits, pigeons, pheasant (field next to us) & blackbird. Their enjoying a drink from the pond & the benefits of no mow May with the grass seeding.

I’ve got to get the Merlin app. We have had a lot of birdsong this evening. Also crows really attacking a red kite. Proper aerial combat.

@MeetMeOnTheCorner crows are awesome birds. When I have more time I would like to befriend a crow (the cat may be a barrier to this dream)

They seem extra loud tonight. All the usual blackbirds. robins, pigeons and a ssong thrush which is a new one.
I'm able to recognise quite a few after using Merlin for a while.

EnidVance · 25/05/2026 06:59

I had a song thrush singing last night, it sang about five different songs!

LezUlez · 25/05/2026 07:03

Last night there were many many jackdaws in the trees near our house. There was a crescendo of their calling, there were hundreds of them. Then as one they all took flight and made their way into the distance.

HoraceCope · 25/05/2026 07:05

i was awake at 4 am and as usual the blackbirds are loudly singing
also a goldfinch
the collored dove, wood pigeons and jack daws start later

Merlin is amazing. It gives me so much joy to be able to identify birdsong now. Much excitement that the swifts are back. We mainly have very chatty robins, all sorts of tits, wood pigeons, thrushes, blackbirds and of course the annoying parakeets!

Theimpossiblegirl · 25/05/2026 09:24

I woke up about 4am and could hear the robins and blackbirds singing away. Then I got a barn owl!

JustOneMoreScroll · 25/05/2026 11:59

Nearly midday here and the app has picked up the wren and robin who seem to be the most frequent and vocal visitors to my garden, plus a blackbird. Also crows, jackdaws and rooks - one of these groups (not sure which) were very agitated which may be explained by the appearance of a red kite.

@MissMogs it is a joyous thing to be able to identify the birds! I can now recognise the wren and robin's songs.

@Theimpossiblegirl a barn owl is exciting such magnificent creatures.

I have a hoopoo bird, a European scops owl, a common nightingale, goldfinches, doves, Eurasian warbler plus the red kites soaring overhead loooking for lunch.

canthavetoomanylights · 25/05/2026 12:17

The blummin magpies 😡😡😡. Every morning about 5am they start the incessant cacking and wake me up!
I love the birds, we have numerous bird baths, blue tits nesting a box, we feed all through winter. But frankly if I had a gun at 5am I would be tempted…

There was uproar last week when a bird of prey appeared. It's amazing how all the birds of different species unite in squawking when one appears.

GasPanic · 25/05/2026 13:29

Blackbird.

I think it is because I feed it worms it has so much time to sit around singing all day.

It also waits on the fence for its fresh container of cold water in the morning to jump into.

Silverbirchleaf · 25/05/2026 13:29

Love the Merlin app.

From my garden, I can hear the constant sound of a chiff chaff, and the melodious sound of a black cap.

On my dog walk, I can add wrens, robins, great tits, blue tits, blackbirds, thrushes, chaffinch, and pigeons to the list. Also once heard the distant sound of a woodpecker wood-pecking.

Leave some water out !🐦🐦‍⬛

My Merlin Ap gets confused in the garden. It doesn't know what to make of the budgies 😂
So I can hear:

Budgie
Budgie
Blackbird
Budgie
Budgie
Budgie
Starling & chicks (nesting in next door's gutter for the second year running)
Budgie
Magpie
Jay
Budgie

According to Merlin, there isn't any bird noise, even though the budgies are quite quiet.

I've found my people! Am lying in a hammock in the garden listening to the birds - here's the last 30 mins on the merlin app.

@MeetMeOnTheCorner Funny you should mention the crow and kite. I've just looked up and seen exactly the same thing. The crow was going mental.

What birds are singing in your garden tonight?
HoraceCope · 25/05/2026 14:48

my app picked up a kestrel recently,
i didnt believe it, but a bit later i saw one!
