Do you put out water for birds and wildlife in hot weather?

Do you do this? if not, please could you put some shallow dishes of water out in a shady spot in your gardens?
Ditches and ponds here are dry or very low and dirty and by doing this you will really be helping birds and wildlife in this heat.
If you can place a stick half in to allow insects to get out safely that would be even better 😊

Yes. All year round for the birds and hedgehogs.

I'm also slightly obsessed with my teasles and their water holding capacity. It barely evaporates.

I always leave water out but I’ll add the stick from now on!

PashaMinaMio · 24/05/2026 10:14

Yes I keep the bird bath topped up.

I do it all year round, so wildlife (and local cats) know where they can always get fresh water. Putting it out once or twice a year means they likely won't even know it is there unless they simply happen to pass by.

I have multiple water bowls in different parts of my garden/driveway.

Yes. I use an old (but clean) paint roller tray and I change the water daily. It’s a really good depth for small birds to get in and have a splash around. All the local cats seem to know that my garden is the place to get a nice drink too, so it gets quite busy at times.

We have a hard shell paddling pool for the dog and in the evenings the birds all use it.

No because I have a cat and it would feel like luring them to their death , he brought a live but injured bird in two weeks ago with no bird feeder/water

I do it all year round front and back garden. It's lovely to watch the bumble bees and wasps having a drink too.

reluctantbrit · 24/05/2026 11:20

Yes, an old slightly deeper plate where I put some stones in it and then fill it up with water.

The stones also help bees to drink as they can land on the stones so they shouldn't be fully immerged.

I've fed the birds for many years at the various properties I've lived in. But it was only four or five years ago that I read about the importance of putting out water for them.
So I got a ground level simple bird bath for the front and back garden. And I can't express the pleasure I've had from watching the use the birds make of them.
It's been an absolute joy for me.

We do. We get lots of wildlife so leave food and water out.

Honeybee111 · 24/05/2026 15:17

Yes, all year round. Very popular with birds, insects, hedgehogs and foxes (and all other creatures we don’t know about).

ShrimpBoil · 24/05/2026 15:20

I have a dog bowl (but no dog!)for bigger animals and a plant saucer with stones for bees etc.
