Freaking out about tick bite

garlictwist · 23/05/2026 20:31

Spotted a tick on my leg this morning after getting out of the swimming pool. Think I must have got it yesterday as I was lying on the grass on the moors reading my book.

Went to Go outdoors, bought the tweezers and got it out.

But I’m quite worried about getting Lyme disease. I know it’s happened now, I’ve done what I can and there’s no point worrying about it but I am.

has anyone else ever had a tick bite and been fine?

Both my DC have had tick bites that turned into Lymes (about 10 days after). It’s very obvious if it does, and easily treated with antibiotics. Both DC are 100% fine, a few years on.

Most people who get tick bites are absolutely fine.

You’ve done the right thing.

apply some antiseptic cream and don’t worry about it

DH has had several ticks over the years (as did our dog) - removed with the tick card and no subsequent ill effects.

Yes and yes. Watch out for the symptoms. Not all ticks carry Lymes.

You can take a single dose of antibiotic within 36hrs of getting the tick bite.

Edited : I just googled it, doxycycline within the first 72 hours, not 36 hours. My daughter was given it after we found a tick embedded in her neck.

Thanks all. Google tells me they won’t prescribe antibiotics as a precaution which I understand.

If you develop flu-like symptoms within a week or two go to your GP promptly. They should prescribe antibiotics as a precaution whilst waiting for test results. Remember, you may not get the standard bullseye reaction to the bite.
If treated promptly you should be fine.

i googled the area i was in to see if lymes was a problem and it said no. try googling your area. i had three of the little bastards. im fine

CatusFlatus · 23/05/2026 20:46

My Lyme disease didn't get picked up straight away and I ended up in absolute agony with joint pain for several days and loss of grip strength in my hand for about a month after.
Even so, I've been told I should be fine and have been OK for the year since it happened.
Just make sure you act promptly if you get any symptoms.

CatusFlatus · 23/05/2026 20:47

Two other people I was with were also bitten but were fine.

DH and I have done a butterfly count in a local nature reserve for several years and often pick them up - it's reckoned you have to have one biting you for 36-48 hours before you are likely to have a chance of catching Lymes. If we don't spot one on our skin (we check each other after) they start itching anyhow by the following morning and we yank them out then. We get them in our garden too (we live in Dorset).
We have been lucky so far, but have met a few local people that have had it.
DH wears his shorts but I always wear leggings on our count - and when gardening.

Take antibiotics just in case.

a single dose of doxycycline 200mg within 72 hours.
