Can I use a gold plated chain with a gold pendant.

My 9ct chain has finally snapped. I have a sentimental pendant on this chain.
The cheapest chain I can find in 9ct gold is definitely out of my price range at the moment.
Would it be possible to use a gold plated chain for a few months while I save up.
I don't want to not wear the pendant as it's something a close to me.

Absolutely, if your chain isn’t repairable. You could even sell your broken chain for scrap to go towards a new chain, gold is so expensive at the moment.

I’ve worn gold plated for ages as I just can’t justify the price of a solid gold chain. The plating did eventually wear off one gold plated chain, but took a couple of years of daily wear, so I’m now on my second gold plated one.

Yes. Gold is one of the most non reactive metals about.

Think of the gold plating on the chain. That does not react in any way.

I never take my chain off even in the shower. Will the gold chip off quickly.

Gold plated should be fine, can you get your necklace fixed ?

Itssosad · 23/05/2026 16:10

@Lomonald I'll try but it is at least 10 years old maybe more and was getting thinner near the clasp.
Will go to a jewellers on Tuesday.

I never take mine off in the shower. You can actually get waterproof gold plated now, but it’s more expensive than standard gold plating. Have a look on Etsy.

I have had older chains repaired we have and they did a good job, see if you can find an independent jeweller or repaired.

Absolutely go to a good jewellers and they should be able to fix it if it’s 9ct gold - good luck :)
