Primary school traditions in England that are less common in Ireland

I’ve noticed a lot of differences between primary schools in rep of Ireland and primary schools in England lately that I thought were quite interesting,so far we don’t have;
-residentials
-school fetes
-Easter bonnets
-harvest festival
-SATS

what else do you have in England that we don’t?

Another difference is that we don't have strict catchment areas. You apply to as many schools as you like and see which accepts you. And there's not a lot of worry about 'good' schools at primary level, they're pretty much all good I think.

Yes I find the ofsted thing and the “good school “ thing mental. Also on MN the amount of people who seem to want to send their children to private schools even though they can barely afford it. That’s nuts to me. We don’t even have a private primary school around here and the private secondary is a lovely school but not highly desired or sought after by any means. My son has additional needs and attends an asd class in a deis school and my god the resources he gets and that the school in general gets are outstanding .

Also on starting times my DD starts at 8.30 she needs to be in her line for 8.25 and finishes at 1.10.

Only 6 weeks summer holidays. How I envied my Irish cousins with their full 3 months.

Yes but its the system. It could be changed to allow more people to teach primary. A slightly lower grade at Leaving cert, perhaps. Or maybe they could assess a continual grade. The leaving cert is a one off exam with a lot of pressure

Maybe continual assessment would be better than a single exam.
However, the standard of Irish for primary school teachers needs to be higher rather than lower imho. The average standard of Irish among primary school teachers in English-medium schools is a real concern at the moment.

It was an all girls convent school. We did knitting as a subject too, and singing.

I was at primary school in the 70s and the girls did knitting and sewing while the boys did football! Not as sexist nowadays thank goodness, but I do appreciate being able to sew in a button and make other minor repairs to clothes. I think it’s a dying skill?
Mental note to give my teens (all boys) a few lessons in sewing over the summer!
