How early should I arrive at Stansted for a Ryanair flight?

Hello,

I’m flying with Ryanair from Stansted on Sunday morning at 6:55am.

One bag to check in. Fast track security not booked.

Ryanair have recommended dropping off my bag from 2:30am! They have also added a video to their app about security delays at Stansted. Has anyone flown from there recently? Is it that bad?

Taxi is booked with the aim to get us at the airport just almost 2.5 hours before at 4:30am. Should I change this?? Panicking and worrying now about missing our flight 😣

I don’t think airlines actually accept your bag more than 2 hours before on a short haul flight? I’d be aiming to arrive 2 hrs before the flight so 4.30 is more than early enough IMO.

You can buy fast track security if you’re worried.

Regardless of where I’m flying to, I always aim to arrive at the airport 3 hours before a flight.

Erring on the side of caution, wouldn’t you rather start your well deserved holiday relaxed, as opposed to being held up through check-in and security and end up sprinting to the plane before the gate closes?

Is it school holiday madness on Sunday? What do Ryanair say about when they'll accept the bag? Jet2 at least will take bags at least 3 hours before, possibly more as they have one queue, not a queue per flight, but I'd be surprised if they took it 4.5 hours ahead of take off.

Having said that, even when I've had to queue for ages, I've always found 2 hours to be plenty and in many cases could have arrived at least half an hour later and still had plenty of time to look in the shops, eat breakfast etc as well as sit ages waiting. But I keep to 2 hours because it includes my 'what if I get a flat tyre on the way to the airport' time.

Plus when there's been huge security queues they tend to pull anyone out who's not through an hour before take off.

I think 4.30 arrival is fine for you.

whattheysay · 23/05/2026 05:39

4.30 should be fine, I don’t know when Ryanair open the bag drop but if I’m concerned about long queues I get to the airport extra early to stand in the queue so I get to the front by the time it opens.
If there are long queues at security and you think you will miss your boarding time you’ll have to start asking people if you can go ahead of them or speak to the security officers. I travel frequently and I’ve never seen anyone at security call people whose flights are boarding soon as a pp said.

Change your taxi to earlier, we always arrive at Stansted 3hrs before, Stansted is the airport we usually use, last flew from there in Jan, security was very busy. It’s also a bank hol weekend and school hols so high passengers numbers will be expected. I wouldn’t chance it particularly as you need to check-in a bag, we usually just take carry on. Have a good holiday.

Flew yesterday, fly every month from Stansted (hate that airport) anyway 2 hours is absolutely plenty of time. I would not both with fast track, Stansted is a very efficient airport and you will not be in security for longer than 15/20 mins. Bag drop probably 20mins max. If it Half term it will be busier but today and yesterday will be the busiest days of travel . When you get to security head right, it looks like you are going fast track & special assistance but there is a normal lane there for security which is quieter than straight in front. Not all of Stansted scanners in security are the latest (where you don't have to remove laptops or liquids) so prepare you see through bag of liquids before you leave the house.

You’ll be fine arriving at 4.30am, wouldn’t change it.

MinnieMountain · 23/05/2026 06:41

We're on a 06:25 Ryanair flight from Stansted tomorrow. We're staying overnight at the Premier Inn and plan to be at the airport 2 hours before.

I understood the bag drop to be available from 2:30 rather than you have to at 2:30.

LlynTegid · 23/05/2026 06:47

Book fast track security if it brings you peace of mind. It is a bank holiday weekend and for many their first flight since EU border arrangements were changed.

Also check about boarding pass requirements beforehand, so you are not stung with extra money grabbing charges if you do not do whatever Ryanair require now. I've read that it has changed recently and could have done since you booked.

Thank you!
Seen that tip about the security lanes but also read that only those with children or disabilities can use it now as too many people now use it? Have you used it recently?
Stansted’s website states liquids can be carried on and not taken out of bags? Website was updated in April 2026 ☺️

We fly from Stansted a lot. Always arrive 2 hours beforehand and normally have plenty of time to spare.

I’m nervous of dropping my bags off too early as being the first bags dropped means they’ve twice ended up on the wrong flights and were once never seen again!

Fast Track security is a game changer both for avoiding queues and avoiding missing planes.

Do you book fast track?

My DH flew from there last Monday. His flight was 06.25.
He tells me it was madness despite having fastrack.
Follow their instructions and you can't go wrong.
You can even get a Leon's or Spoons breakfast.
Be aware that the boarding gates are about 4 miles away too

BlondeFool · 23/05/2026 07:19

At least 2 hours before. I aim for 2.5 hours as I get stressed and like having a drink in the spoons after security.
