Normal bruising?

Every so often my son get small finger print type bruises on his back, near the spine. They are usually yellow or light brown and fade fast.

He is just turned 3 but I think this has happened like 10 times since he was 18 months.

He does bruise easily and is very fair.

I keep reading that bruises in this area are always a bad thing and not normal, but is this really true?

Does anyone elses kids bruise here?

He also gets similsr bruises oj shins and near elbows, but presumably this is due to running about , falling, playground, etx.

Photo attached. There are 3 marks today

My son gets them there from being in his car seat. He is a very slim boy with no added fat so always assumed it was that as my daughter doesn't get them

Really @TheLargeOnes? I'm trying not to get worked up (healthy anxiety!). It has been happening for so long though. I don't think it is car seat but thought maybe a swing or slide or sitting in the trolley. Hmmm

I don't remember my first getting bruises here but they are darker skinned and don't bruise easily.

They look a little bit like cafe au lait markers. My ds has them. They're harmless, but for him, are another indicator of a genetic condition he has. Best to get properly checked by a doctor though

SherlockIsHome · 23/05/2026 07:52

@blubberballshe has 2 of these on her legs. But these back ones are new from yesterday. Cafe au lait don't come and go do they?

Well....mystery likely solved, for anyone who sees this in the future!

We just happened to use the potty after a bath tonight(so he had no top or trousers on) and I saw a big, red indent on his back right after.

The potty must be an awkward shape/size for him. I'll be holding over the toilet from now on!

Glad you found your answer! My 4 year old is very similar, very pale, bruises easily. He’s had several small similar bruises on his spine or near it. I have health anxiety but I’ve never really worried about those as he’s always falling over, bashing things, fighting with his brother. I think if it was anything worrying it would be there more frequently

SherlockIsHome · 23/05/2026 20:15

Thank you @gentlemum !
