Just heard that Judith Chalmers has died. She was 90. Gone to the great beach in the sky.

Thought she'd died years ago tbh...

REP22 · 22/05/2026 13:22

Sorry to hear this. She had a lovely presenting style. I liked watching the old clips of her with Mary Berry on MB's last TV series.

Needtosoundoffandbreathe · 22/05/2026 13:24

She had Alzheimer's which I guess is why she'd disappeared from public view.

She was part of my childhood and I remember having a little crush on her tv presenter son many year’s ago. A new destination awaits for Judith.

Dollymylove · 22/05/2026 13:54

Rest eternal peace Judith.
I loved the holiday programmes xxx

KnittyKnotty · 22/05/2026 13:57

I only knew of her holiday programme in 1980's/90's but from reading Wiki she on loads of things in her youth in 50', 60's.

Horrible to hear her last few years were spent living with dementia.

Davros · 22/05/2026 13:58

I had a chat with her and her husband in a restaurant a few years ago. They were both charming and unpretentious

Somethingbland · 22/05/2026 13:59

That's very sad.

She was part of my childhood too.

RaraRachael · 22/05/2026 13:59

I loved Wish You Were Here. It was my only pre internet way of seeing other places.

Oh yes, if you are as old as I am, the holiday programmes are the last thing you remember when her name is mentioned.

She was the queen of British TV back in the day.

Her son is an arsehole. I have dealt with him a few times. His wife however, is lovely. I have no idea what she sees in him!

MamaBobo · 22/05/2026 15:21

I used to love watching her on Wish You Were Here. There are some wonderful clips of her on the Thames TV archive channel on YouTube.

This one is a gem!

Oh dear is he? What a shame when his mum seemed lovely. I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t find him remotely attractive now, pity his poor wife.

That and Wicker’s World which I loved.

I can’t remember who she used to co-present with because she was the most memorable one. Seemed a lovely lady.

Oldraver · 22/05/2026 15:55

She pinched my sofa in an airport lounge but was uttily charming as was her husband. I think I expected them to be a bit snobish

PhilosophicalCheeseSandwich · 22/05/2026 15:58

I googled her last weekend to see if she was still alive 😬

Figcherry · 22/05/2026 16:00

I loved it when she did a cameo on Duty Free.

Yes, and Holiday on BBC, and Wicker's World as pp mentioned. Brilliant escapism, and undoubtedly contributed to my neverending wanderlust 😊

Me too.

I never went abroad as a child, didn't really have holidays in that kind of way either, but absolutely loved that show.

ThisJadeBear · 22/05/2026 16:01

Always reminds me of the factory scene in ‘Dinnerladies’ when one of the husbands says Judith is his ideal woman….
Charming, well-groomed and never at home!
For a whole generation calling someone ‘Judith Chalmers’ was a warm comment, as in, ‘Who do you think you are, Judith Chalmers?’
And she really did bring holidays to us, at a time when so many more of us started going abroad.

We never went abroad as my parents wouldn't fly. They were convinced every plane was going to crash!

missmoffatt2705 · 22/05/2026 16:51

I remember once her being described as a peripatetic lobster by a TV critic - I think I had to look up the word peripatetic !

LlynTegid · 22/05/2026 17:32

May she rest in peace.

I met her in the 1980s at a travel fair, and somewhere I have a group photo with her and the others I was at a stall with. The person I met was the same as you imagined seeing her on tv.

Justanothernamele · 22/05/2026 18:10

Have lovely childhood memories of Wish you were here. There wasn’t as choice and you couldn’t get reviews like trip advisor.

We did travel quite a bit but once on proper package to Spain, otherwise lots visiting family. I was incredibly excited, I expect my parents were looking to the kids club!

Then you had the other side with Watchdog and That’s life with all the disaster trips and scams.

Victoria Wood made a number of references to Judith Chalmers over the years. IYKYK.
