What age children’s clothes would a petite size 4 woman fit?

I am struggling to find clothes for my elderly mum, she is very frail so can’t get to the shops herself so I have tried her with size 6 but it’s too big and won’t stay up with her tiny waist now so it’s mainly bottoms we’re struggling with, she’s not been well and her muscle have wasted and she’s just skin and bone so I think I’m going to have to order her some children’s clothes.
I’m just wondering what age to buy. Shes 5 foot 2 and smaller than a 6.

What size she is in bust and hips?

TeenToTwenties · 22/05/2026 11:37

Age 13/14.
My not quite 5ft DD is in 13/14 pjs but has woman body shape and size 14 trousers.

I’m sorry you’re going through this - it’s hard to watch your mum go through this.

Probably 12-13 or 13-14 depending on her exact measurements, the particular shop and the style of the item.

PragmaticIsh · 22/05/2026 11:39

I'd say age 10-11.

Needmorelego · 22/05/2026 11:41

My 18 year old daughter is about 4 ft 10 and fairly skinny.
She wears a mixture of size 152cm and 158cm clothes which is usually labelled ages 11-12 and 12-13 depending on the shop.
A lot of children's trousers have adjustable elastic waists which is handy because you can make them tighter.

NewYearVibes · 22/05/2026 11:41

I think it depends on the measurement. My 15yo DD is 165cm tall and very slim. She's a dress 6. I suggest you look at children sizes of 12yo upwards too.

What size she is in bust and hips?

Well she has no bust at all where she’s so thin, just a tiny bit of lose skin. I haven’t measured her hips but she’s certainly not curvy and her bum is flat too.

I'm not sure. I'm 5'9 and wear a ladies size 10 and my son's age 13-14 clothes fit me or can be a little loose (jeans are a bit ankle swingery due to my height though).

So I would guess someone as petite as op's mother might need 11-12.

TeenToTwenties · 22/05/2026 11:44

Yes maybe. The 11/12 will be very child cut though, no hips.

Aww sorry to hear this, very hard to go through. I completely understand the issue as MIL had bird like proportions even before she got frail so we had the same issue. As for sizing though, it’s probably dependent on the brand (like women’s clothing is so vastly different in sizing from one shop to the next). We had some success with Mini Boden as they seemed to be better proportionally ie waist size seemed well balanced with leg length. Maybe order some bottoms from eBay first to get a feel for the sizing? 11-12 or maybe 12-13 I’d say. Unsure if they still do it, although you’ll get it on eBay, but the Johnnie B range had the benefit of being slightly more grown up styles too.

I am 5’3. I lost weight from illness down to about 7st6 and Zara kids and M&S size 11-12 fitted very well. I actually found the 12-13 / 13-14 a bit long and loose. As they’re kids clothes quite a lot of the trousers etc are adjustable and have extra buttons inside the jeans to tighten the waist. Bless your poor mum. Hope you get sorted for her.

Girasoli · 22/05/2026 12:54

I'd say age 11/12. I'm 5'3" and a size 8/10 and I can wear a size 13/14.

Forty85 · 22/05/2026 12:56

I'm an 8 and fit in age 15 to 16 or 14 to 15 so maybe 13 to 14 or 12 to 13?

TheChosenTwo · 22/05/2026 13:33

I’d guess age 11ish, I think next kids have measurements on their size guide (I’m sure most do but I’ve looked next up recently), I’m 5ft 7 and a size 8 and can wear age 13/14 depending on the garment.

pizzaHeart · 22/05/2026 14:18

i would say that 12-13 or 13-14 then .
My DD is short petite so I often buy her in children clothes. I would say that size depends on style - if they are oversized or slim fit.
My experience:
If you are after plain leggings e.g black or navy - try Primark children clothes .
M&S children is generally a bit bigger. Next is for slim and tall girls.
I also agree about adjustable- M&S is good for this. If she is after more formal trousers/skirt - I would try school wear in M&S.
I wouldn’t go to New look, Zara or H&M.
Tu at Sainsbury might be an option, they are not so generous as M&S in normal range ( and their light cotton shrink a bit more) but better in school wear, plus you can order online to practically any local Sainsbury’s.

ricketybeauty · 22/05/2026 14:24

@witchinblue I am 5,2 and height wise age 13 is perfect, but I'm a size 8 and 13-14 generally fits me perfectly (possibly with a little bit of room).

I'd try 12-13, but still might be a bit big. I think then the clothes are going to be a bit too short to be honest. Probably wouldn't matter so much if it wasn't trousers you were after.

Perhaps if you bear it in mind when you are shopping you could look for something that's easy to alter on the waist. Thinking like with toddler trousers where they've a button and elastic on the waist to tighten it.

Good luck

Oxo01 · 22/05/2026 14:34

If you just want cheaper bits then Primark has tiny sizes in lots of things. And children's bits.

AzureLurker · 22/05/2026 17:40

I'm 5'2" and size 4-6 ish, (4 in some and 6 in others) I find some womens brands are too big for my also narrow hips and will often pick up age 12 on vinted. It seems most brands including my speedo swimsuit have age 12 at 158cm which is 5'2".
Edited to add -H&M for example will show adult 6 i think as Canadian size 160/80A and age 12 as 158cm on the labels. 13-14 is often big for me and is 164cm which does make a difference!

IwanttoWFH · 22/05/2026 18:05

Age 12-13 will probably work. I’m 5ft 2 and I can wear kids aged 12-13. I wear size 4-6 adult clothes.
