Is this wage too low for this role?

Jellox · 21/05/2026 19:35

This job looks really interesting and rewarding but am I right in thinking that the wage seems really low?

It’s surely going to cause some second hand trauma and be a mentally challenging job - but perhaps these types of jobs are all around this pay.

It’s full time, salary £25-27,000.

I’ll copy and paste part of the job description below:

PURPOSE
To provide specialist advocacy and support to children and young people and their families who have experienced rape, sexual violence, or sexual abuse, while also allowing flexibility within the role to work with adult survivors where required.
RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Provide specialist, trauma-informed advocacy and support to children and young people who have experienced sexual violence. There is also a need to support adult survivors of all ages when required.
  • Provide compassionate, non-judgmental emotional and practical support tailored to the age and needs of children and young people, ensuring they remain central to all our interactions.
  • Assess risk and support children and young people in creating a tailored safety and support plan.
  • Offer guidance and advocacy through the criminal justice process, including support with police investigations and court proceedings, From ‘Report to Court’. including accompanying them to meetings with the police, the courts and other professionals.
  • Providing clear and accurate information to survivors on reporting rape and sexual violence offences so that they can assess their options and make informed choices.
  • Work closely with parents/carers (where appropriate) and professionals, ensuring a coordinated response to support.
  • Build strong partnerships with education providers, social services, and health professionals to enhance support for young survivors.
  • Provide information on rights, entitlements, and options available, empowering young people to make informed choices.
  • To provide ISVA cover as needed across the service, which may include supporting at court and holding cases temporarily.
  • Attend case conferences, multi-agency meetings, and contribute to safeguarding processes where required.
  • Manage a caseload, ensuring that the case management system, and all other recording systems, are updated in an accurate and timely manner in line with data protection regulations and organisational policies.
  • Manage your own diary and correspondence, make your own room bookings where necessary and arrange and cancel your own appointments.
  • Work effectively both independently and as part of a team, managing a busy workload, prioritising tasks efficiently, and remaining calm and professional under pressure.
  • Develop and maintain strong and effective working relationships with key external stakeholders.
  • Participate in the development and delivery of awareness-raising activities for professionals and young people…..

That’s not much above current minimum wage. Shocking.

Zov · 21/05/2026 19:36

That is a low wage for all of that IMO.

Itsnotallaboutyoulikeyouthink · 21/05/2026 19:38

All wages are low currently if you ask me. I’m on £57k and see my equivalent job advertised for £20k less.

AnnieBond · 21/05/2026 19:39

Im exhausted just reading that. All for that salary 🤣🤣🤣 that would be a no from me!

Lifeisexpensive · 21/05/2026 19:39

Yes it's low. But it relies on people wanting to do the right thing and work for a genuine purpose. My background is animal welfare and some starting salaries for a 40 hour week are around £15k...because people care about animals.

That is way below minimum wage, so illegal.

Zov · 21/05/2026 19:42

Is it this the job @Jellox ?

But it's sold as a way to get qualifications on the job. Not quite an apprenticeship, and also as a lot of people lack confidence they don't then go for the qualifications. I completely agree, it needs locking down, but this is the reality.

LarryStylinson · 21/05/2026 19:48

Standard sort of charity support worker salary. Assuming mileage paid on top.

There’s a lot more involved too!

And a lot of travelling (doesn’t say about travelling expenses and whether they are paid or not).

Yes although I saw it on indeed.

I didn’t want to post it as I didn’t want the charity getting a bad name or anything.

This is the thing!

All of the jobs that I have even done/want to do are very much helping people but they’re all rubbish wages.

Thing is @Jellox you copy and pasted the job description word for word, so it took 3 seconds to find the ad, so you didn't make a very good job of hiding who they were. 😬

I know.
I did consider changing the wording as I thought someone might but then I couldn’t be bothered so just copy and pasted 😂

I knew the answer would be yes before I even opened the thread. Depressing

Jellycatspyjamas · 21/05/2026 20:00

It is bit third sector jobs do tend to pay low wages to front line workers.

StormGazing · 21/05/2026 20:10

A lot of the time it’s about qualifications and who can do the job I’m afraid, if many can do and they don’t require a degree in higher they can pay low wages - sucks
