Can anyone identify the song in the recent M&S YouTube advert?

Watching YouTube just now and an advert featuring models walking down a catwalk modelling summer clothes from M&S played.

I'm trying to identify the song played in it.
It sounds as if it is by Massive Attack (or that style of music). It's at least 25 years old. Possibly 30-35.

Any suggestions as to what it is?
I once asked a complete stranger whose car it was playing in what it was when they were parked and I walked past but they didn't know. Lol.

Been trying to find out for years.

Thanks in advance for any replies.

We watched one of the summer m and s ads recently and got frustrated as we couldn’t work out the song. Might not be the same one that you have seen but the one that got us guessing was Tom Tom club genius of love.

Or is it Your Love by Jamie Principe/Frankie Knuckles, which was then sampled by The Source for You've got the love?

Now that’s what I call a choon!

“Erens Bootleg” mix of You Got The Love for me all the way.

I always thought the New Voyager and subsequent mixes of “You Got The Love” were lifeless by comparison.

QuintadosMalvados · 22/05/2026 06:22

I actually watched the YouTube video and it was not played by the dj. Strangely hypnotic watching all those models walking down the catwalk. Put me in the mood for sleep.
I wasn't particularly sharp yesterday as I would have realised this.
I think that they've added it to the YouTube snippet of the show.

It's got to be this year's show though.

In other words, it's footage of the show (not sound) with music added on top.

It's not Tom Tom Club. I like that song, too. Very melancholic

I get the insistence on you got the love now.

Interesting, isn't it? All this sampling makes songs difficult to identify.

I would have probably realised that given the setting they'd only be playing Ibiza classics!

Well I've checked out all the suggestions. None of them are it.
The only one I could say it wasn't straightaway was you got the love.
Obviously, it's been used in an M&S ad - I don't doubt it-but not the one I'm thinking of.

Maybe I'll just listen to some Massive Attack.
It's a really moody, heavy song.
Not poppy at all.

Thanks anyway. I'll tweet M&S.

My immediate though was to write to them because I'm really old. Like the song I'm trying to identify. 😁

@QuintadosMalvados

It’s Frankie Knuckles, ‘Your Love’.

Edited

Yes the beginning of this song does indeed sound very like the song I'm thinking of.
Maybe I'll search who sampled who.

Thanks.

@QuintadosMalvados The Candi Staton opening sounds identical without comparing them side by side doesn’t it. I think the M&S version is Frankie Knuckles, though.

I always thought that FK’s version was first but I think the CS version was actually a few years earlier (1989 vs 1986).

QuintadosMalvados · 22/05/2026 08:06

It's the bass bit at the beginning I think.
At least I am not thinking I imagined it now.

All this sampling and remixing of songs makes identifying songs tough.

Then again maybe it just sounds very similar.

I like songs from all genres. I'd attempt to hum it here but last time I did that I got it all wrong.
A friend likes Metallica. I'm not a fan bar this single song. I attempted to hum it.
We concluded it must have been a hit for me to have heard it.
It turned out to be 'One'. They laughed as my interpretation sounded nothing like it.

It's hard to untangle it all for sure.

My apologies.
It IS the Eren's bootleg mix!!

The bass line that has haunted me for years is on this but not on the version I know. Or if it is, I can't hear it.

Thanks all who helped identify it.

Bugging me for years.

Point taken. Lol.
It's just the version I've heard doesn't seem to feature that distinctive bass line.

Great song.

You sure do.

Without sounding too pretentious, the versions I've heard lack an edge.
Too sweet if you know what I mean.

I think this is why Florence + The Machine's version doesn't resonate with me.
Too much feminine energy not balanced out with masculine energy. Yin and Yang.

Now that is pretentious. Lol.

Now there's this other song you might be able to help with... Only joking.

I've just been in Manchester M&S and there's a window display playing Your Love by Frankie Knuckles on repeat with no vocals.

One thing I've learned from this thread is that trying to identify some songs is quite the task when there's a lot of sampling involved.
It's complicated.

Great bassline.

The 1991 version of You Got the Love takes me back to my uni days. That bassline is instantly recognisable.

Tunnocksmallow · 23/05/2026 23:21

Shazamed it and it’s Frankie Knuckles Your Love

think it samples candi Staton

Yes. Owing to the nature of this sort of song, it took time. 😁

Sampling, a million different versions.

Gaslight by record producers. Lol.
