I want to start my new car insurance policy 5 weeks early (so I can include my son). Do I need to cancel the current policy or can I keep both?

My son is 20 and has just passed his driving test but current insurance company don't allow under 21s so I need to move to a new company.

I probably won't get anything refunded from current company as 5 weeks cost £40 ISH and there will probably be admin charges.
Is it illegal to have two policies running at the same time?

You need to cancel one before starting the other.

Didyoufindit · 20/05/2026 10:41

You have to have a new policy and cancel the old one

MadeForThis · 20/05/2026 13:20

You will lose your year of no claims bonus.

chirrupybird · 20/05/2026 13:24

You can't be doubly insured, who would pay out if you had an accident if you were?

Seawolves · 20/05/2026 13:31

You might be better off exploring temporary insurance for him in the short term.

27pilates · 20/05/2026 13:41

Why will you lose your NCD? Not following ?
Just do a website comparison and find one that you can him as a named driver. I’ve done this a few times with my own son. You have to pay the cancellation fee etc but overall it works out fine.

Just ring the insurance company and ask them?!?! Mumsnet isnt your insurance company!

Veygo

Our DC have used Veygo for several years, although we've never had to claim (yet - touch wood!). They have an app, and it's really easy to either book insurance by the hour, or for longer periods (I think we once did 3 months, but that was several years ago).

If he just uses this temporary cover for the next 5 weeks, you can keep your current insurance policy in place until the end of the year to earn the full years NCD.

theturtleswims · 21/05/2026 12:24

Also, you might want to work out how much temporary insurance will cost over the next year based on when he expects to use the car, compared with how much it will cost to add him to your insurance policy as a named driver. This might be a non starter, but if he's away at uni a lot, for instance, it might be worth considering. Obviously with temporary cover he wouldn't be getting any credit for being a named driver, which does sometimes make a difference when he eventually gets his own policy.

I would just wait, 5 weeks isn’t that long

MadeForThis · 28/05/2026 18:09

If you don’t complete the whole year then you lose that years no claims bonus.

POTC · 28/05/2026 18:13

Another recommendation for Veygo, son used them when he passed, I've used them whenever I've changed my car, and he uses them whenever I need him to drive mine for me now.

I've spoken to the insurance company and they have said that I won't lose my years no claim bonus because my son is 20 and they don't insure anyone under 21 so they are accepting the reason for ending the policy early.

And they will also waive the admin charge for ending early and give me a refund for the number of unused days pro rata.
