Does anyone else feel incredibly pressured to make the most of sunny weather?

I have come to the realization that whenever it is very warm outside, I internally pile the pressure on myself to get the most out of the weather/enjoy the weather, and insist on being outside for most of the day even if that's not what I want to do/have time to do! The weather forecast for this weekend (bank holiday) looks fab, in my area of the UK even up to 27 degrees which is obviously very warm.

A bit of history - I had my son (who is now 8) and before school years I worked 3 days a week, 4 days off. There was plenty of time to enjoy the nice weather.

Fast forward to now DH + I both work 5 days a week, normal weekends off but our weekends are quite full of seeing family, decorating, the odd walk here and there and also just relaxing and decompressing after the week of work.

Does anyone else think the same, put the pressure on themselves to enjoy the sunshine and then feel incredibly guilty when life gets in the way and you can't enjoy the sunshine ?

Kind of but I really think Vitamin D is important, physical and mental health and regulating circadian rhythm.

Poorabbeywalsh2 · 19/05/2026 11:45

Yes, I cannot waste a sunny day being indoors doing housework. The weather has been so awful that I have to find somewhere to go, because of course, the weekend may be 27° then it could snow next week and I'll regret not enjoying the sun. Even relaxing in my own lovely garden seems lame.

Livpool · 19/05/2026 11:46

I think it is because we have so few genuinely hot and sunny days that I am not wasting them sitting in

EffortlesslyDirected · 19/05/2026 11:47

Not really we just crack on with whatever was planned or needs doing, although we will try and fit something in that needs good weather like an evening BBQ at home. But we avoid e.g. going to the beach because it will be rammed. If anything I'm annoyed it's going to be so hot this weekend because I have masses of gardening needing doing and it's going to be too hot for it.

Gardenpleasure · 19/05/2026 11:49

I don't mind a bit of sunshine OP but I prefer my sunny days to be pleasantly warm rather the hot temperatures a lot of peoplee seem to crave.
I like it to be still cool enough to do day to day activities without flagging in the heat

I dislike the way people behave in sunny spells, especially living in a coastal town where there is an influx of visitors and the police have to continually patrol the beaches to control anti social behaviour and confiscate alcohol.

So actually generally I get through sunny weather living in hope of a nice rain shower rather than making the most of it OP.

Would love this problem - we've been living under endless grey skies in Cornwall ALL year....

SpringHasSprungTheGrassIsRiz · 19/05/2026 11:51

Totally, because they are so rare! I lived in South East Asia for a time and realised I had to intentionally tell myself that the sun shining EVERY DAY meant I needed to chill out about 'making the most of it'.

IHateEmptyPockets · 19/05/2026 11:51

@EffortlesslyDirected I agree about the gardening… I’ve got loads to do and will probably get outside early and come in by 1pm when it really warms up… it’ll be too much for me by then. Followed by a hot bath for aching muscles and rinse and repeat for Sunday and Monday! Grin

Laiste · 19/05/2026 11:51

Yes. But only from myself 🤪

My DH works outside a lot and when it's hot and he comes home from work he has no desire to 'sit out on the patio'. I offer a cold drink out under the umbrella but he usually just wants to sit indoors with the sun blinds down and chill as usual with a cup of tea. And often i think thank god because i've spent the day forcing myself to go out there and garden and mow and weed and do extra washing of weird things like curtains and get them dry outside while it's ''lovely out'' and by late afternoon i'm thoroughly sick of it !!!

It takes a good 10 days of consecutive hot sun for me to start thinking i don't have to find reasons to be out there. (and how often does that happen?!)

Magnumyumyum · 19/05/2026 11:51

Actually, I do have an outside job that needs doing of painting one of our sheds. I may do that as its still getting something done but also enjoying the sunshine

Well yes because I always think what if this is 'it' for good weather for the year!! I was going to finally paint the bathroom, but definitely not now!!!

RegularFrankieFan · 19/05/2026 11:53

Not at all, but I go out in all weathers, so I don't think a day is "wasted" if it's sunny and I don't do something outdoorsy because I can do things outside whenever I want. If it's sunny, but I fancy a lazy day indoors, then that's what I'll do. A day is only wasted if you're not making the most of it in a way that is meaningful to you.

KeyLimeCake · 19/05/2026 11:57

Totally.
I step outside, smell a BBQ and wish I was having one (or better, invited to one).

I react to tales of "we piled everyone into the car and drove six hours to the beach" with envy (despite knowing I would hate it!).

I see the weather is great next week for half term, so everyone will be living their best life on beach breaks, while I am working and hoping my teens will leave the house at some point and "make the most of it" themselves.

That said, I love those bright sunny evenings at a beer garden or just in my own garden. Less pressure and I do try to enjoy.

Buscobel · 19/05/2026 12:11

Strong winds and heavy showers here for about two weeks now. My roses had started to bloom, but have been decimated by the wind, in particular.

MidnightMeltdown · 19/05/2026 12:19

Yes, those days are precious in the uk because they are so rare!

Echobelly · 19/05/2026 12:22

I know what you mean, when British summer can be very fleeting. Although that's less and less often the case. I suspect we're on the path to a decently warm summer - the worst ones tend to follow long, cold springs IME, which his hasn't been.

Delatron · 19/05/2026 12:25

These days are so rare and long awaited (it’s nearly June!) that I personally want to make the most of them. But for me that may mean ditching the housework and sitting in the garden with a book. Nothing busy or exhausting. If that doesn’t appeal then no you don’t need to do anything. It will be back to rain soon!

AprilMizzel · 19/05/2026 12:25

I did when kids were babies and young and we could only do so much and sometime had to be in -for naps. I think I was subconsciously picking up some pressure from IL - MIl in particular.

There was a few trips in later yeras she lament lack of really good sun - it would be a typical UK summer/spring day overcast or sun with clouds. We went up a nearby mountain walk on a spring day over cast not too hot perfect had views but wasn't too hot - she kept on and on about lack of sun till we turned round and said would you want this walk in a hot day - which was a no from her. Same with zoo trip where we did have a really sunny day and it was too hot but she kept on how good sun was while complaing about it being too hot to do anything.

I like overcast days where there's no rain or light showers. I'm also still read ajusting to not seeing a sunny day and thinking must get washing out - as kids start to move out and washing gets managable.

Moveyourbleedingarse · 19/05/2026 12:51

I have never had this.

Its still OK to stay inside and read a book when it's sunny outside.

purplecorkheart · 19/05/2026 12:56

A bit. I try and loads of washing of things that are heavy and normally hard to dry. I am lucky that I live near a large park so I often bring a book down and read on a bench rather than indoors. However if I want to watch netflix etc I do not let the good weather stop me.

BatshitCrazyWoman · 19/05/2026 13:01

No, not really. It's a bonus if the things I have planned for a day coincide with better weather (like a PP, I don't like hot weather, but warm and a bit sunny is good), but even if they are indoor plans, I still just go ahead, whatever.

My parents loved lying about in the sun (I don't) and were always forcing me to sit with them when I was a child, which I found really boring.

Sartre · 19/05/2026 13:17

Yes I do. I almost feel relieved when it rains because I have an excuse not to have to go out.

KeyLimeCake · 19/05/2026 13:25

Was just thinking I have a big duvet wash planned for the weekend, maybe even some pillows.
Roll on the sunshine!
