I cannot sleep in silence…… if I am lying in the dark all I hear are my own thoughts and I lie there for hours and hours.

I take medication daily which sadly has insomnia as a side effect, which obviously doesn’t help, and the only way I have found that enables me to get to sleep is to have Netflix playing on my mobile (low volume) with a timer so it stops playing after a couple of hours.

This works really well and I fall asleep really quickly.

However, I have noticed now that whenever the show/series stops playing I will wake up within 20 minutes. It’s almost like my brain now can’t stay asleep unless there is background noise.

I tried using a longer timer but after a few hours the programme stops anyway and a message appears that says, “Are you still watching?” - and obviously as the show has stopped I quickly wake up.

I have got a lovely Bluetooth eye mask with inbuilt headphones but obviously as it’s all connected to my phone the issues with the programme ending and things becoming silent still apply.

I need something that will play continuously throughout the night that is a device of its own, i.e it is entirely separate to my phone.

Kind of like a child’s night light, but it plays stories instead of white noises, and doesn’t glow 🤣

Does such a device exist??

I use an eye mask with built in speakers, with YouTube on my phone. The mask lasts all night and if you type ‘no ads’ next to your YouTube search (whether that be spa music, rain sounds or brown noise like me), they’ll often run 8-10 hours uninterrupted.

If you have an alexa get an audible subscription. My dd has always been a poor sleeper abd for years had the harry potter books playing throughout the night.

Bith her and I have insomnia and silence makes it a million times worse.

I have a tv in my room and it plays true crime drama series throughout the night.

Try the Lululight app - it’s incredible and free to sign up at the moment!

I listen to audiobooks but often natural history or travel so you aren’t drawn into the story and I also slow the speed of the narrator’s speech - then it’s less effort to follow what they are saying so easier to doze off

These stories are great for getting to sleep. Exactly as described, gentle stories ro stop your mind racing but where nothing much happens so it doesn't keep you awake! The narrator has a very soothing voice and each story plays twice, the second telling (I have never made it that far) is slower to help your brain switch off.

Nothing much happens: bedtime stories to help you sleep

Phenergan is good.

I tried this last night, couldn’t sleep for hours but was a zombie today.

I have radio 5 on all night it's just talking

Workworkwok · 18/05/2026 22:26

Audiobooks, although I do use my phone, but it doesn’t switch off. Similar to a pp, I mostly listen to gentle non fiction, as dramas either get you too involved in what is going to happen, or they have dramatic changes of pace or voices that can jar me out of sleep. I listen to a lot of nature stuff, or science, or history as long as it’s not too bloody or some autobiography. Or fiction that I already know, old favourite novels, including children’s books.

HowdoyoureallyKnow · 18/05/2026 22:41

Magnesium, pod cast set for x time gentle interesting my fab is good bad billionaire on BBC sounds at the moment. Lavender drops on pillow

MotherofPufflings · 18/05/2026 22:44

Cognitive shuffling. Google it. Has made a massive difference to me. I do regular on calls where I get woken, have to be wide awake and functioning for a few minutes and then, hopefully, go back to sleep again. I used to struggle to drop off again but cognitive shuffling has me asleep again within minutes.

Thanks everyone!

I did actually order some magnesium supplements yesterday and I’m waiting for them to arrive.

I need to work out why my phone keeps pausing whatever I’m watching, or listening to after two hours just because I haven’t physically touched the screen, because it doesn’t seem like anyone else has this issue?

I keep waking up to silence and when I look at my phone my programme is paused and there’s a message on the screen that says, “Keep playing?” or “Do you wish to continue playing?” etc etc

Is this via an App?

Dream egg white noise machine, available on Amazon. Plays continuously and has several different sounds to choose from. DD1 has had hers for five years now and it’s still going strong.

Franpie · 18/05/2026 23:05

There are loads of sleep podcasts that run for hours and hours. I also have my Apple podcast app set to just continue onto the next episode continually until I press stop. So I go to sleep with a podcast playing and when I wake up in the morning, it’s still playing.

Also, have you tried melatonin? I take 5mg on nights when I’m feeling tired and 10mg on nights where I think I’ll struggle.

I get friends or family to get it for me from the US but you can get it from online pharmacies. It’s amazing.

PortSalutPlease · 18/05/2026 23:07

I do the history for sleep videos on YouTube - if you put your settings to auto play next video it’ll go as long as you like.

This is because you’re watching Netflix. It’s a Netflix thing, not your phone.

Switch to podcasts.

Thank you!!

I’ve just downloaded the Apple Podcasts App…it looks complicated 😱

There are podcasts which are designed for sleeping to. Just rambly voices all night long.

You should speak to your prescriber of your medication though if it's causing such extreme effects, as there might be something they can suggest.
