A stupid question about making coffee with Nespresso

Hello, hubby has a Nespresso machine which he uses to make espresso for lattes, I don’t really drink coffee myself.

When we’ve had eg workmen round asking for a “white coffee” I’m not entirely sure how to make this with a Nespresso - the espresso setting is too short/strong which is fine but the “longer” setting barely fills half a normal mug which feels a bit pathetic even after I’ve added a bit of milk.

So I’ve tended to use two capsules to make two longer coffees and then top this off with milk. But it seems a bit much to be getting through 2 capsules a time, especially when we’ve had a few people round and they’ve reasonably wanted a couple of coffees a day.

Am I doing it wrong? Should I be making just one “longer” drink and topping it up with boiling water then milk, or even doing that with an espresso shot?

In the past I’ve bought instant but then we don’t drink it so we end up binning it when it goes off.

I’m clueless as you can see.

TIA.

No they aren’t. They use a tiny bit of aluminium which is infinitely recyclable. We recycle all of ours using the Nespresso pod drop off scheme.
We go through 4 pods a day and every month it’s the aluminium equivalent of 3-4 tin cans. You may as well berate people for buying baked beans or chopped tomatoes or cans of coke.

Yeah except beans and tomatoes are essentials that don’t come in any alternate viable packaging options vs coffee pods which are most definetly not essentials and many viable alternative packaging option exist. And while you may recycle, many people don’t and it just gets added to landfill.

You're absolutely right about coffee beans being available in less wasteful alternatives but I'm laughing at the suggestion that baked beans are one of life's necessities.

I’m laughing at the idea the only way to access beans and tomatoes is to buy them packaged in a tin!

Just buy a small jar of instant once a year. Problem solved.

And if you hate waste you wouldn’t have a Nespresso machine in the first place - the pods are terrible for the environment.

Edited

Nespresso capsules can be recycled and are made of metal.

And yes, instant coffee does deteriorate once opened, which is why the first cup from a new jar tastes better than the last cup from an old jar.

If you care about giving your tradies the nicest possible coffee, pour an espresso shot as normal then fill the cup with hot milk.

See that’s what I understand as a latte! They usually just want a big standard coffee with milk.

I’m laughing at the idea that everyone should always be making their own baked beans from scratch!

It does go off, it solidifies into a single lump!

?!

Never experienced this and I don’t drink instant, I only have it in for guests…

Not if you buy the biodegradable pods?

Namechangeforthisdilemma1 · 19/05/2026 16:38

in answer to the OP - I would still only run it through a pod once so maybe do two pods.

But the sachets idea is good. I genuinely have no idea why your jar of instant coffee is doing that, maybe you just need to stir it round now and then? I don’t drink ours at all but have guests fairly regularly so I guess it gets used up a bit quicker.

I used to have this problem with Horlicks and then I started keeping a sachet of silica granules in it (e.g. stuck to the lid). I think it's because the jar isn't completely airtight so the granules slowly slowly absorb water and start to deliquesce.(Editing: the silica gel absorbs the moisture so stops it happening, I use it in salt jars too if necessary.)

I have a nespresso machine. If I have a tradie ask for a white coffee, I put a mug under and press the longer button and then press again for more hot water. Then chuck some cold milk in.
They have never complained!!
