Best way to get from Waterloo to LCY during tube strike?

Help, we are flying from LCY on Friday next week and have just seen there is a tube strike. We come into London Waterloo and are now not sure the best way to get to the airport. We will have cabin bags. Will London be really busy? Thinking of Waterloo East overground train towards DLR. Not sure what to do for the best. Need to be at the airport at 11am. Any advice? Thanks x

Download the Citymapper App and put this journey in for Friday arriving at your target time.

It says walk to Waterloo East for a train to London Bridge. Then from London Bridge, catch a train to Cannon Street. From Cannon Street - walk to Bank where you can catch a DLR to London City Airport.

SheilaFentiman · 17/05/2026 16:46

Approx when is your flight? Tubes restart from midday Friday (though will be disrupted in the afternoon)

SheilaFentiman · 17/05/2026 16:50
  • No service is expected on the Circle line, Piccadilly line, the Metropolitan line between Baker Street and Aldgate, and the Central line between White City and Liverpool Street
  • Service is expected on all other lines

It looks like the Waterloo and city might be running, in which case catching that to
Bank would be easiest.

Can you get the uber boat from waterloo? It might connect with the DLR a bit further up?

SheilaFentiman · 17/05/2026 16:53

Bus 76 from Waterloo would take you to Cannon Street, short walk to bank from
there.

Depending on the time you might find it more pleasant to take a train from Waterloo East out to Woolwich Arsenal, and then get the DLR to City Airport.

It’s a longer journey but if you do it at, say, 11am, it will very likely be much quieter and more comfortable than going through central London stations. There will be comparatively few people heading out of London on that line at that time.

HarveyLouis · 17/05/2026 18:08

Thanks everyone, an extra layer of stress we weren't expecting

@HarveyLouis Looks like the Jubilee line is running from @SheilaFentiman‘s post.
So I’d get that from Waterloo to Canning Town, then change there onto the DLR for City Airport.

edit to say leave plenty of time though, obviously!

edit again after checking tfl planner!

Just to warn you last tube strike, I couldn’t get a bus for love nor money and they disrupted the train from Waterloo east to London Bridge (I’m sure deliberately). Maybe it will be better this time but I would plan for it to be worse if you’ve got to get a flight. Might be worth looking to see if a booked taxi is better.

it does HUGELY depend on what time you are coming as there are breaks in between the strikes

OrangeJellySnakes · 17/05/2026 18:15

that advice is not for the whole strike

HarveyLouis · 17/05/2026 18:15

We will lave home as early as possible and I think all tube lines will be affected apart fom Elizabeth Line and DLR and they will be really busy.

TfL journey planner does show Jubilee line as running on Tuesday

Best way to get from Waterloo to LCY during tube strike?
MustardBear · 17/05/2026 18:20

Here’s the strike info on the TfL website

tfl.gov.uk/campaign/strikes

LewishamLass · 17/05/2026 18:25

TfL Journey Planner on website is good too. If strikes go ahead you can check level of service.

If Jubilee line is OK go to Canning Town as that's the right branch of DLR, not Canary Wharf.

Train from WAE to Woolwich and switch to DLR sounds good if you have time. Don't be tempted by Lewisham or Greenwich as they're on wrong branch of DLR.

Bank Wat&City platforms are a long walk from Bank DLR platforms so would be least favourite option with luggage.

Typed slower than @MustardBear 😆

mynameiscalypso · 17/05/2026 18:27

In the last strike, the Jubilee was running but not the whole line and on a reduced timetable (therefore very crowded)

OverlyFragrant · 17/05/2026 18:28

The jubilee line to Canary Wharf, then DLR to Poplar, change for a train going to Woolwich Arsenal. LCY is 3rd to last stop.
Trains from Waterloo East to Woolwich Arsenal aren't very frequent, if you do need to take the National Rail, take the first train from Waterloo East to London Bridge then pick up the train to Woolwich from there.

MustardBear · 17/05/2026 18:33

@LewishamLass I had to edit as initially said CW, then only when I checked TfL did I realise Caning Town was actually much better!

MrThorpeHazell · 17/05/2026 18:55

Cab to Bank then DLR to LCY.

TimeforaGandT · 17/05/2026 19:14

Get off at Clapham Junction (assuming your train stops there), change onto Windrush Line (every 15 minutes from Platform 2) and go to Shadwell where you can change onto DLR for LCY. Avoids tube and central London.

Timetakesacigarette · 17/05/2026 19:27

Cabs and buses will be packed and traffic will be grid locked. Waterloo East to Woolwich Arsenal then DLR would be the least stressful I think.

Edited

This is a good alternative, be aware involves a bit of walking.

The two Shadwell stations are completely separate buildings about 5min walk apart. There are lifts in both Shadwell stations.

HarveyLouis · 18/05/2026 08:04

I have never heard of the Windrush Line, will look into it. Also thinking of just getting an Uber from home to be on the safe side. Nearly 90 minutes journey though so will not be cheap.

OP posts:
LewishamLass · 18/05/2026 09:34

Windrush is the new name for one part of the Overground (orange line).

The different parts of the Overground got separate names a year or so ago to help identify the different routes but I still think of it all as the Overground.

BillieWiper · 18/05/2026 09:39

It takes 33 mins to walk to Bank from Waterloo. If you get desperate. And it's quite pleasant walking by the river. As long as cases have wheels!

LewishamLass · 18/05/2026 16:36

Good news @HarveyLouis, strikes called off this week.
