Are you planning on visiting the DRC?

Otherwise, not really a concern.

That's not how it works is it?!
We didn't travel to get COVID either did we? It came to us carried by someone who had and the same could be likely with ebola.. Someone travels and comes into the UK with it and hey we all get it.

Firstly, dont be so ridiculous.

Secondly, DRC is easily avoided as PP says.

Thirdly, ebola is horrific and you scaremongering about something that will never affect you is tasteless.

If only USAID hadn’t been decimated…

Makemeinvisible · 17/05/2026 09:00

My goodness @user1471538275
How very dismissive of other peoples suffering, misery and death.

I heard about this on the news this morning and it just feels when you think things can't get any worse in the world some new hell comes along.

StormGazing · 17/05/2026 09:00

There have been many Ebola outbreaks, it’s usually well contained as the communities know to quarantine

Since its spread through bodily fluids and isn’t infectious before symptoms and many outbreaks have been controlled and we start the outbreak with a vaccine and knowing how to manage it, the Covid answer is fairly irrelevant.

AmethystDeceiver · 17/05/2026 09:01

Have any of the previous ebola outbreaks got you op?

goodness me how is it tasteless to have concern for people in other countries?
how do you know where I live
we are not all so self centred

Ebola outbreaks happen every year or so. It is a horrible disease and with a high mortality rate but luckily it can only be spread by contact with bodily fluids if an infected person. We have nothing to worry about. There is almost zero chance it will get to the UK and zero chance it would not be contained if it did.

ThatPeachQuail · 17/05/2026 09:04

No it's not worrying unless you live in a very small area of DRC and are coming into contact with bodily fluids.

As a PP says, outbreaks happen with frequency. Of lots of diseases.

that is not my point
i am personally not worried for myself

Ebola mortality rate is too high for it to spread in the same way as Covid etc. plus it isn’t airborne or transmitted the same way. There have been Ebola outbreaks frequently over the years in DRC and other places. It’s a very nasty illness but is generally confined to communities because it requires contact with bodily fluids, not just being near someone who has it.

what shocking responses there are here

Well nothing like a Sunday morning to bring out the selfishness and unpleasantness in people!
Unbelievable attitudes on this thread.

Crunchymum · 17/05/2026 09:07

My (admittedly) limited understanding is that Ebola is such a horrific illness it kills its host/s long before it can reach epidemic numbers? So as long as it's identified, quarantine imposed etc then it's very unlikely to move beyond 'outbreak' status.

I'm concerned how many MN'ers seem to rub their hands with glee at the thought of another pandemic (not particularly talking about this thread but the recent Hantavirus threads were eye opening)

I am personally not at all concerned about Ebola.

FriendshipDynamic · 17/05/2026 09:08

I take it all these hysteria mongers self isolate every time you catch a cold or flu? Because that’s far more likely to spread than some illness 5000 miles away which happens every few years anyway.

Clefable · 17/05/2026 09:10

This is the 17th outbreak in the DRC alone, they had one a few years ago that killed something like 2000 people. Very horrible disease, especially when combined with varying quality of medical facilities in rural areas.

FriendshipDynamic · 17/05/2026 09:10

Presumably the families of the victims.

otherwise, nothing to see here.

Larrythecatforpm · 17/05/2026 09:10

There is always Ebola outbreaks, stop making something out of nothingz

Marshtit · 17/05/2026 09:11

the WHO are declaring an international concern

it seems the majority of posters are only thinking of themselves and dont care, in that case, dont bother posting, you are doing yourself no favours
