I've never tried tiling, but I reckon I'd be really good at it.

There is absolutely no evidence to suggest I would be. I just really think I would be great at it. One day, when the stars align and I own my own little house, I will tile the bathroom and the splash backs and maybe even the top of a piece of furniture. Or a table!! I like tiles.

What do you, in your heart of hearts, truly believe you'd be good at despite having never tried it?

I have to agree op. I’ve wanted to try tiling but my DH put a stop to it.

I think I’d be an awesome F1 driver. I don’t have any racing experience but I’m just sure I have the knack.

Oricolt · 17/05/2026 08:46

I support your F1 dreams, Hobbit. You go!

I reckon I’d make a pretty good pilot. I remember watching the simulator on krypton factor and thinking it back then. Only thing stopping me is my fear of flying!

Turnitoffnonagain · 17/05/2026 08:49

You could do a mosaic tile top on an old coffee table to test your theory.

I love those shiny and iridescent tiles in the diy shops.

I think I'd make a great TV chef. When cooking i have an internal dialogue "now add the stock, a little at a time......"

Wish44 · 17/05/2026 08:50

Ha ha op - I have similar thoughts about tiling - I actually think about it quite a lot

LadyMacbethssweetArabianhand · 17/05/2026 08:59

I tiled my kitchen and utility room in my old house. The full tiles were straightforward but the cuts proved challenging because I didn't have the correct tile cutter. So I needed someone to do those.
I did all my own decorating too.

Davros · 17/05/2026 09:00

@Oricolt do you watch Chateau DIY? They’re always tiling when they’ve never done it before. I always think I’ll win pub quizzes and raffles but I don’t. I suppose it’s optimism. I think I can trim my own hedge (not a euphemism) but I’m more likely to sever a limb

pitchblackromance · 17/05/2026 09:21

I always say I could drive HGVs really well (I couldn't, my drivers license has been medically suspended so I can't even drive an actual car 😂)

I think I could design an amazing theme park despite being so bad at art that my art teacher begged me not to take it for GCSE, and having no experience in physics, design or psychology. I don’t even like going on big rollercoasters.

CarrieMoonbeams · 17/05/2026 09:34

I think I'd be tremendous at plastering, mainly on the strength of the fact that every millimetre is covered when I butter my toast.

However, I am very small, so couldn't really plaster above, say, waist height due to
a) knackered shoulders and
b) fear of heights (so no ladders for me).

Oricolt · 17/05/2026 09:49

God we're probably good at stuff. Designing theme parks. Plastering. Driving native lorries. Celebrity cheffing. We're an impressive bunch, in theory.

Roller skating. I did it when I was young but I’m 55 now and still think I’d be awesome at it. I often think about roller skating.

I always think I could design a gold medal winning Chelsea garden, then I remember that I'm very much a 'that'll do' sort of person and wouldn't even get a bronze.

Having had someone in to tile a bathroom many years ago and not been very happy with the work, we said that when it came to the kitchen we would do it ourselves.

The setting out is the key, making sure the tiles are positioned correctly (no half hight tiles at the top of the splashback, symmetrical positioning along walls, around windows etc), spend time doing that and the end result will be much better.
The correct tools help, we bought a wet cutting table and it was a game changer compared to the score & crack type. It was also good (along with my a small angle grinder my OH already had) for trimming tiles to fit behind sockets etc.

We were very pleased with the result and even my FIL commented on how professional it looked.

I tiled my bathroom in 2004. Very expensive bathroom suite fitted by DH but he didn't fancy tiling so I thought I'd give it a go with basic white tiles. I bought an electric tile cutter which made a massive difference.
Still looks good 😊

I tiled our old bathroom. I hired a tile cutter and it was surprisingly easy. Start in the middle.

Why the middle, out of interest? Doesn't this potentially raise the volume of tiles needing cutting? (A tiling curious person asks...)

I’m going to a quiz tomorrow so obviously I’ll be coming home on the bus with the trophy 🏆

CarrieMoonbeams · 21/05/2026 06:44

Ooh, congratulations in advance @Davros 🏆.
