Burnham - why?

What is it that Labour supporters think he will do better than Starmer?

Why are Labour pissing off the markets for the potential to have this guy as leader?

I'm not a Lab voter. I don't mind Starmer tbh;
not my policies but overall ok.

I want to understand. Right now it seems like a total waste of time.

What Labour don’t seem to understand is that they can get rid of Starmer, but we’ll still have a Labour Government. The poor decisions won’t stop.

What specific poor decisions are you referring to?

Because he has done a good job in Manchester and has been talking, for a while, not just recently, about using those methods of improving the lot of 'working people' particularly the poorer elements of society across the country. He has really championed causes such as renationaliseing rail travel, cutting homeless numbers and putting bus travel back.into the hands of the council
He has a lot of support across GM.

Andrew Neill hit the nail on the head with this tweet today:

British politics will reach a new reductio ad absurdum in the Makerfield by election:

Vote Labour to destroy the sitting Labour Prime Minister.

Support Labour PM Starmer but NOT voting Labour.

We are having a by-election not because there’s any demand or need in the national interest but entirely to suit the convenience of the byzantine politics of the ruling party and the political pygmies in whose interest it is run.

We are no longer a serious nation. No wonder the bond markets are squiffy.

Manchester is probably only second to Brighton now for LGBTQIA+ representation.

A lot of that is down to Andy Burnham.

He's a strong believer in trans rights and is a supporter of self ID 👊

FamingolosForDays · 15/05/2026 18:48

I couldn't really give a shiny shite about who the actual big boss is, but it seems unbelievably short sighted to trigger a by-election just so labour can vote in a new leader. What happens if reform win!

That's what I think.

its the same government.

why cause carnage for a different leader?

And there was me considering voting Labour if he was leader. Thank fuck I found that out.

What a prick

Totalmayhem · 15/05/2026 19:20

It’s an absolute circus - why on earth is a healthy sitting mp resigning so he can be replaced by a member of the same party?! - shouldn’t be allowed. Labour are proving themselves to be more power hungry and treacherous than the Right. Appalling behaviour and quite obviously not capable or worthy of leading our Country.

This... totally... the PM will still be a Labour PM... fine ... but...
Since the electorate has no way to vote for the PM, it's all pointlessly moot. If Burnham eventually becomes PM, what will he change? Will he mitigate the NI and hospitality misery?

Politics is enormously important to everyone but there is no direct way to vote for the PM. I can vote at every level for qualified candidates who do the best job for me/my area locally but ultimately, I cannot vote for the top dog. This is crazy.

Riapia · 15/05/2026 19:26

He talks about these things but has he done any of them?

Has anyone?

Miranda65 · 15/05/2026 19:35

It will almost certainly be a worse Government because Burnham will move to the left of Starmer. People wanting a new PM should be careful what they wish for.....

It is a weird situation. If Reform win, then will anyone else have the guts and support to challenge Starmer? Streeting clearly didn't have the numbers needed.

The other issue is the LLP still has to actually select Burnham. What if they say nope?

I reckon Starmer has the 🍿 out right now, like the rest of us.
