Help! with single adult council tax rebate dc turned 18 and still in education

Im a single parent of 2 teens and my eldest recently turned 18 but is in full time education at college and intends to stay on in education. As a single parent ive received the single adult rebate on my council tax.
I received a letter today from the council asking me to review my status for rebate as they are aware my dc has now turned 18.
I scanned the QR code to complete the online form and declared dc is 18 and submitted their date of birth. I expected the next page to ask for details of dc's status as in if they're in employment or education but no that was it form completed and it just said I'd receive a new bill now im no longer a single adult.
Im now in a huge panic that im going to have to pay an extra 25% each month as im already struggling and just about getting by.
I have read that if dc is 18 or 19 and still in full-time education we should still qualify for the single adult rebate.
I don't know what I expect you MNetters to do other than please give me some reassurance that all will be ok and i wont receive a huge bill. Will they automatically know my dc is still in education I just cannot believe it did not ask their status.
its impossible to contact them to speak to someone at the council for help, believe me ive tried. I have filled in an online help form but it said it can take 2 plus weeks for them to respond due to how busy they are.

On your council tax bill there will be a phone number and click on “payments” as if they think you’re calling to make a payment they should hopefully pick up or alternatively ours has an email address.
in terms of the 25% discount I’m not sure as there is 2 of us however if you are struggling I know some people get additional help with council tax more than the 25% off linked to UC.
go on the entitled to website and put your wages in and see what it says.
I hope you get it sorted.

This explains it:

You should still get a 25% discount.

The 25% discount is nothing to do with UC. Entitled to is terrible at calculating any form of CT benefit, which varies across the country.

ETA: I might have misinterpreted what you said about 25% discount and UC.

@ManufacturedConcerns
im sorry maybe im confused but ive heard of some people getting a bigger discount with some sort of council tax benefit - maybe that isn’t the case now if its changed??
the COLC is so hard for people hoping Op gets some help soon.

The 25% the op is talking about is the single adult occupancy. That's not related to UC.

Then some councils offer income based reductions. Many don't. There's no centralised council tax benefit anymore.

Seeline · 15/05/2026 22:46

There is usually a separate form to fill in for exemption/reduction. Have a look on the Council website.
Technically your DC is exempt from paying council tax, which then makes you a single adult entitled to the reduction. You will need a letter from the college to say that your DC is in FT education.
However, if they finish their qualification this year, even if starting a new course/going to uni in September, you are likely to have to pay the full rate between the last day if the current course and the start date of the new course.

Saladcreamormayo · 17/05/2026 01:01

Thanks all for all your responses on this looks like we should still qualify for single adult rebate. dc does leave college shortly after A level exams but is due to start uni in September. I hope we dont have to pay the in-between time in full as pp mentioned.
il just have to see what my amended bill says and take things from there. Gonna be a nightmare trying to chase a letter up from college so close to the end of term but il and ring them on monday.

I think they call this council tax 'disregard'. There's a separate form to fill in (no doubt on line - it's a while since I had to do it). You declare your DC as exempt due to student status. That only then leaves 1 qualifying adult in the property so you get your 25% discount back.

Saladcreamormayo · 17/05/2026 14:37

@ohtowinthelottery I didn't know this as they dont make that obvious at all on the online forms. theres actually no section to tick that they are 18 but still in education so I just filled in the short online form asking residents d.o.b's as that was all it asked. I kind of get now that I should have filled it in as though dc didn't live here. stupid really as they dont make it clear and obvious, its almost as though they do it on purpose to trip people up to get extra money of people.

I had this with my council too. It went on for months as they are so far behind they take weeks to respond to anything. Scour your council’s and the government website to find where it says that 18 year olds are exempt until they leave school or equivalent and send them the link. This is what I had to do. It’s a completely ridiculous waste of time for everyone.

I think I had to pay the full fee from 1st August to when he started university. One of many difficulties of being a single parent.

ohtowinthelottery · 18/05/2026 10:04

@Saladcreamormayo I suggest you have a look at Money Saving Expert Council tax discounts. Martin Lewis has given lots of information about it and has done a tv show covering who is entitled to which discounts/exemptions.

YooBlue · 18/05/2026 10:14

Councils make it so damn difficult.

I got it wrong because I took ‘disregarded’ on our form to mean I didn’t need to include Uni- headed Dc. It seems I had to include Dc and then get them categorised by the council as ‘disregarded’ for CT purposes.

Then I had to get proof that they were at Uni.

Don’t panic! You may tear out much of your hair but it will be OK in the end.
