Does bone broth really help gut symptoms and how long does it take

Does bone broth really heal your gut? How long before you see a difference?

I’ve been having it daily alongside other diet and lifestyle changes for a month and no change in symptoms yet ? Do I need to be more patient ?

Have your tried kefir? Daily kefir boosts good gut bacteria in 3 months. This is proven by studies that looked at stool samples before and then after a 3 month period.
What symptoms are you trying to improve and have you discussed this with a Dr in case investigations are needed?

I tried kefir and it made me really unwell-bloated, in pain, gassy and nauseous then after that I read that sometimes things like that can aggravate symptoms (I think I have IBS my gp said I just have a sensitive digestive system and advised peppermint)

Sounds like you don’t like dairy, kefir has never made me feel anything like that and I use it for colitis. It really helps build your immune system, kombucha is non dairy and has a similar gut health benefit.

I don't think there are any single foodstuffs that will "heal your gut", I'm afraid, and there isn't any evidence that bone broth has any special properties.

Peppermint tea is a good call as it is anti-spasmodic, does that help at all?

Backedoffhackedoff · 15/05/2026 18:02

I don’t even under stand what the “heal your gut” claims are supposed to mean. Your bowels are 6ft odd of long dark damp tunnel. You need food to transit through it smoothly. If 6 ft of intestine needed healing it would be a medical emergency.

i don’t see how meaty water will heal anything. Or kefir. Things like fibre and fermented foods are very helpful to support transit in a healthy gut. If there is a problem with the way your guts work, I think that requires more targeted/ specific action.

what is it? Diahorria, bloody poo, constipation, stomach pain?!

Easier said than done, but reducing stress massively improves all of my digestive issues.

LittlestBoho · 15/05/2026 19:48

Have you read Dr Michael Moseley's book The Healthy Gut diet? That has lots of information about how to improve your gut health.

Unfortunately, a multi pronged approach is what's needed. Bone broth alone won't do much. I'd recommend giving up dairy, wheat, and other foodstuffs that trigger you, take daily probiotics, eat 10 portions of fruit and veg every day, eat fermented food every day, and eventually you will see changes. It takes a while for your gut to become populated with good bacteria! Quitting dairy is the thing that has the biggest effect i think.

Bone broth can help some people, but it’s definitely not a magic fix for gut issues, especially if the root cause is something else like stress, IBS, food intolerances, or inflammation. A month is usually enough to notice at least a small change, so if you’re seeing absolutely nothing, it may just not be the thing your body needs right now. I’d keep focusing on the overall diet/lifestyle changes rather than relying on broth alone.

Pain and bloating, when the pain is really bad all I pass for days is mucus. Terrible constipation unless I take laxatives daily. I do take probiotics but it took a lot of trial and error as many gave me severe nausea.
I eat a lot of veg but can’t eat leafy green veg or salad. The only fruit I tolerate is berries.
I have a lot of allergic reactions.
I don’t seem to absorb vitamins or supplements well?

Have you had or asked for a referral to a gastroenterologist? Or had a colonoscopy? mucus can be a sign of your colon trying to heal something.

have you tried FODMAP? Harsh but for some people it’s all that works

I feel for you, it’s debilitating.

YoullWishYourLifeAway · 16/05/2026 16:57

@Guthealing if you are taking unprescribed laxatives everyday they may be causing you issues. They can cause mucus by irritating the colon lining.
You need to speak to the dr. They should do stool samples at the very least and, depending on symptoms and result, a referral to colorectal.

They may prescribe Resolor for the constipation.

Many probiotics don’t do, or even contain, what they claim as they aren’t regulated and not classed as medicine.

The GP prescribed them years ago and I’ve not been able to wean off them they said it’s safe to keep taking them and to add peppermint (tea, capsules or peppermint water) to manage symptoms. I just keep being told as I have no bleeding or weight loss it’s just a sensitive digestive system.
