Where is summer?

Is it unusually cold for this time of year or has it always been like this?

I thought we were in May yet all we’ve had in the last few days is arctic wind and hail stones/thunderstorms!

Is anyone else despairing at the lack of sunlight since April?

yes! Although today looks nice and it’s set to be scorching by the end of next week…hopefully it’s properly on its way. It’s usually a lot warmer this time of year (north west) but we’ve had a very long grey and wet autumn, winter and spring. I’m so happy to finally see the sun again today!

BoredandAnnoyed · 15/05/2026 08:06

Well it’s still only spring and it’s really not unusual to have wind, hail and rain in May.

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/05/2026 08:07

A memory of FB from a few years back popped up, wherein I was wondering if I'd be wearing any summer clothes. So I dont think this year is massively unusual but I really would like it to warm up!

DisplayPurposesOnly · 15/05/2026 08:08

Ne'er cast a clout til May be out 😃

Tellmetomorrow57 · 15/05/2026 08:09

I think last year was lovely and the comparison has been harsh! It's been really cold for May even by North West standards. The rain has been grim too.

I've been watching the giro d'Italia though and it seems the same over there!

Fingers crossed for soon xx

Summer starts on 21 June.

tiramisugelato · 15/05/2026 08:09

It’s not abnormal to have hail in May - there’s even snow on the tops here (Cumbria).

Supersimkin7 · 15/05/2026 08:12

Grey, grey, grey for six grey months.

Or mental.

I couldn’t get to a really important appt thanks to the Last Judgement on Weds - hail, typhoon & thunderstorms. Three times each.

yonem · 15/05/2026 08:15

It’s normal for it to be cold this week - it’s the week of the ice saints https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ice_Saints

EBearhug · 15/05/2026 08:18

I was taught never to put tender plants out until the end of May because of the risk of late frosts.

Hail can happen any time of year.

The gardens round here (and farms even more so) are desperate for rain.

We are in Britain. Changeable weather is very normal.

PuttyTat · 15/05/2026 08:19

I remember it snowed for a few minutes in May about 20 years ago.

Octavia64 · 15/05/2026 08:24

Last frost is usually May

i accidentally left a tomato plant out overnight and it was not happy.

May (the tree) is already out which is apparently what the saying refers to, so doubly disappointing weather for me!

I'm going on a girls' weekend in the UK and I'm side-eyeing the pretty dress and sandals I was hoping I'd be wearing 😠

Savvysix1984 · 15/05/2026 08:26

We’ve had lovely sunshine most days for the past few weeks. Past few days been a mixture of sunshine and showers. Dd has been sunbathing/ studying in the garden most days for weeks.

CharlotteStreetW1 · 15/05/2026 08:29

Yes, we've noticed Europe hasn't fared well this winter/spring either, eg Athens had the coldest May Day on record this year and have had flooding and all sorts.

ThirdStorm · 15/05/2026 08:30

I was only just thinking this, the last few days got colder and wetter here, blanket back on my bed!

BatshitCrazyWoman · 15/05/2026 08:30

It's not summer, it's still spring. In the UK changeable weather is quite normal, especially in spring, including frost. Where I live, I think the average temperature is about 16° in May, it's not always scorching hot!

DancingThroughLife02 · 15/05/2026 08:31

I do think back each year and try to remind myself that we say every year how rubbish the weather has been but PP is right where they said that it’s felt like a lot of endless grey. The only silver lining I can really think of weather wise this year were those couple of weeks in April it was glorious.

Next week does look a lot better but I feel like if it gets cold again after it’s so disheartening. The changing weather constantly makes me feel quite unwell too.

I’d be happy with average - it’s the fact that it’s not really getting above 10/11°C in some places at all.

April was warm and dry as a bone!
Hence bluebells bring early
Trees blossoming too soon etc etc

Summer is coming there is always a bumpy ride getting there with odd weeks of bad weather - the garden needed this rain mind, the trees are verdant! And the birds are happily hunting worms in between downpours

frozendaisy · 15/05/2026 08:49

Averages are becoming almost irrelevant climate change is here whether you believe in it or not
