? bed bugs...freaking out

My DD is on holiday in Greece, arrived late last night, has got up this morning and spotted 'bugs' crawling on the headboard. She has checked the mattress and there aren't any stains in the seams. The bugs are small and whiteish. They are moving rooms - she has binned the pjs she wore last night and put her hoody in a plastic bag and will keep separate from the rest of her luggage. They have hard shell suitcases and haven't unpacked.
Is there anything else for them to do?
Bed bugs are my worst nightmare......

They’re not bed bugs if they’re white. Bed bugs are dark and will leave tiny blood stains on the sheets. Moving rooms and sending the pyjamas to laundry will be enough, no need to bin them.

Ok, thank you. There was some brown ones I think too. The photos are a bit rubbish. I think the white things were moving.

Ignore those photos, they are rubbish....😂.The video she sent does show very small, dark/brown moving insects, and the white ones were moving too.
The mattresses looked ok.
They have moved and thoroughly inspected the new room. Ugh. I know its dramatic but genuinely feel like I would lose it if got an infestation at home.

I’ll try add some clearer photos incase anyone happens to have incredible eye sight and in-depth knowledge of the bed bugs.

How big are they? It looks from the photos more like bird or rodent mites. If you can get a clear photo, AI should be able to identify them.

You don't mention if she has been bitten? Multiple itchy bites, usually in straight lines on the back or torso. Can't miss it. If she hasn't been bitten, lots, it isn't bed bugs.

Bugsy73 · 14/05/2026 14:11

Think they're pretty small. No blood stains or anything on the mattresses. Chat GPT said maybe not bed bugs but the photos aren't very clear so unsure.
I'm keeping everything crossed that a much lovelier type of bug!

Hasn’t been bitten. There are 3 beds in the room and the bugs primarily on the bed they didn’t sleep in - but kind of pushed up very close next to it.

Bed bugs are about 5mm long. I had a similar panic a few months ago when we were infested- it turned out to be bird mites entering from a nest in next door's eaves. It took many rolls of double sided tape and rubbing alcohol but we are now rid of them.

SpiceGirlsNeedAComeBack · 14/05/2026 15:03

Yep those are bed bugs!

Lindy2 · 14/05/2026 15:14

It's impossible to tell from the blurry photos.

Could she really not manage a better close up?

Bedbugs are reddish brown and like walking, biting small apple pips. When they shed their skin the casting looks white but a casting wouldn't walk around.

Changing room sounds like a good idea. Keep the suitcases away from the bed.

If she still thinks it could have been bedbugs then you need to be very careful unpacking at home. Bag everything up and put everything through a hot wash and tumble dry before it goes anywhere else in your home.

Thing is, if it is bed bugs, they won't be in just 1 bed, or 1 room. Bedbugs take down entire buildings. They get everywhere, fast.

I used to drive buses for backpackers in the early 2000s and it was a recurring issue in hostels where backpackers brought their own sleeping bags, or caravans on campsites that provided old wool blankets that never got washed.

Nearly everywhere uses duvets now, where both the duvet and the cover get washed, not old blankets, and personal sleeping bags are banned in most hostels.

But the tell tale sign is the bites! They look similar to mosquito bites, but, the clincher is, in straight lines, and usually lots and lots of bites. If she hasn't been bitten, they weren't bed bugs.
