Flight had to be cancelled - refund advice please

Flight ticket refund advice please. We have to cancel Easyjet flights to France next week as my DD's husband has been diagnosed with a serious long-term illness (she's 6 months pregnant and I need to be here to support her right now).

My travel insurance doesn't cover cancellation unless death or injury of close family member, no leeway in our circumstances. Someone mentioned Section 75 Consumer Credit Act could maybe help but I paid for travel insurance via debit card, not credit card. Does anyone know if this Section 75 thing would help please?

I don't think your circumstances would meet any criteria for a refund.

Can you roll over the flights for another trip later in the year? That would probably be your best option.

Thank you for very quick response. Probably not able to book later as medical situation and then baby's birth all up in the air right now, sadly.

You can’t just claim chargebacks for stuff when you change your mind. Not if the service hasn’t done anything wrong.

The flight is still going. You’re choosing not to take it.
And you chose the travel insurance and agreed to its terms when you paid. So you’re not covered for this.

You’ll have to eat the loss.

Sorry but you’re not going to be able to get money back for this. Your travel insurance doesn’t cover it and you can’t do a chargeback for choosing not to go.

ohyesiseethatnow · 13/05/2026 22:04

Who do you think should refund you? And why?

Easyjet are not going to refund you. You are choosing not to go. And even if you’d booked on credit card the bank wouldn’t refund you for this.

Sorry to hear about your families situation but I think you just need to focus on that and forget about the flights.

I hope everything works out ok.

As above - unless your insurance covers this in some way you simply forfeit the flight

Clearinguptheclutter · 13/05/2026 22:06

EasyJet should let you change your flights to a later date, you’d need to pay any extra in fare
that is probably your best (only) bet

Why do you think they should refund you?

The flight didn't have to be cancelled, you're making a conscious choice to cancel and as with anything if you cancel you unfortunately have to forfeit the monies paid.

Whilst it is unfortunate that there are issues in your immediate family and you would prefer to understandably now stay at home you can't expect the airline to reimburse your for that choice.

From google: Section 75 of the Consumer Credit Act 1974 is a UK law providing legal protection for credit card purchases, making the lender jointly liable with the retailer if things go wrong. It applies to items costing between £100 and £30,000, covering faulty goods, non-delivery, or misrepresentation.

None of these apply so you’d be better asking to change your flights as already suggested.

You can claim the air tax duty back. There is a form hidden on the website. I did this recently when we didn’t take an easyJet flight and not covered by insurance.
