What are the chances of this carpet matching?

I had a new stair carpet less than a month ago, supplied and fitted by the same people.

The edge of the bottom step has started lifting and (to me) it's obvious that's because it was cut too small, the tacks are havung to go into the very edge of the carpet, which is frayed, so there's nothing there for the tacks to hold onto iyswim.

I got back in touch with the company who first said " well it's veen down 3 week", then that they'd send the fitter back. I wasn't happy with that because firstly he "manages his own diary" so they couldn't give me a time, and I wasn't prepared to give a whole day to getting this fixed, but also becuase I didn't want the same man back to assess his own work and assure me it would be fine with a bit of glue or more tacks - it won't.

So, the manager came out. The first thing she said as she walked through the door was "do you have pets?". No, but that rather set the tone. Then she suggested it was due to hoovering. I don't hoover often, but surely that's a basic thing a carpet should be able to cope with?

Then she actually looked at it and told me it just needed pulling round and more tacks. It doesn't you can see where the whole row are pulling out because there's nothing for them to grip. FWIW the previous carpet had been down 25 years without any such issue.

Anyway eventually she's agreed to order a new piece of carpet and replace the bottom step.

I realise I'm gearing up for a fight that may never happen, but from a different batch, how likely is the carpet to be a good colour match?

If you are happy for them to refit the bottom tread, it might be worth asking if there is any waste left from the job (although unlikely ). Presume you are happy with the rest of the work.

Whether the colour matches entirely depends on whether they can get some from the same batch - might be possible if it’s not a fast seller.

unless it’s a really pale colour it will likely be fine and you won’t notice.
More likely to be an issue if it’s something ‘natural’ like sisal as more variation in colour.

Can you post a photograph of the part where it’s lifting - is it where the tread meets the riser ? Or where the riser meets the floor?
Ordinarily the carpet would be folded around if you are talking about where the riser meets the floor, Although it depends on the type of riser and the flooring.

It shouldn’t be fraying after three weeks.

That manageR was a disgrace as an error has been made somewhere, which could have happened anywhere from measuring to ordering, to cutting to fitting. It sounds like it has either been short measured or cut wrong, possibly at the warehouse. Errors happen even at the best firms, but how they deal with it is the key.

Did you pay the fitter directly or did you pay all the money to the shop? If the latter your contract is with them and if they are reputable there should be at least a guarantee of labour and materials for a period. You are also covered by the Sale of Goods act I believe. Did you pay by Credit Card?

carpet fitting has tanked as a profession over the last few years , many independents have gone under and chains like Tapi don’t have the same standards (except where they are in John Lewis) as a good independent. good carpet fitters are usually self employed and rarely short of work and will work for the shops that pay them the most.
