Can anyone help me calculate the equivalent word count for my assignment? Please!

Please help!

I'm working on an assignment for a course I'm doing. The word count is 4500, if you are submitting a standard piece of work.

But mine isn't standard, and the guidelines for the assessment for the type of work I'm submitting is that 750 to 1000 words is equivalent to 1250 of a standard piece of work.

My brain is frazzled and I can't work out how many words I need to submit.

The other day I somehow came to the conclusion that if I took 1000 words to be equivalent to 1250 then that would be 3200 words.

But I don't know how I worked that out or if that's accurate.

Please, please can someone good at maths help me out.

Or would 1000 words = 1250 mean 3600=4500?

That's 4000 / 1250 x 1000.

Is that right?

So then if 750 words is equivalent to 1250 that would mean 2700 is equivalent to 4500?

(1000/1250) x 4500 = 3600
(750/1250) x 4500 = 2700
so between 2700 and 3600

MuesliMusings · 13/05/2026 12:58

Yes, 2700 to 3600

Thank you @MiddleAgedDread and @MuesliMusings !

To me it looks as if you need between 60 -80% of the 4500. Depending on whether you're taking the 750 or 1000 word equivalent. So 2700 to 3600.

Which is quite a difference....

murasaki · 13/05/2026 13:00

I'd go for somewhere in the middle.

FadedRed · 13/05/2026 13:01

750 is 3/5 (60%) and 1000 is 4/5 (80%) of 1250
4500 divided by 5 equals 900, multiplied by 3 (60%) equals 2700 and by 4 (80%) equals 3600, so your word count should be between 2700 and 3600.

OP, the math to figure out minimum word count:

750 1250
—- =. ——
x. 4500

Where you need to solve for X (you said 750-1000 is equivalent to 1250). Then it’s just cross multiplication : 1250x = 3,375,000. Divide both sides by 1250. X = 2700. Your minimum word count is 2700. To double check, put 2700 where X is in the equation and both sides should be equal in a calculator (750/2700 is equal to 1250/4500).

DilettanteRedRagger · 13/05/2026 13:02

I did not use AI and I double checked the math. I understand this is a very important issue for you right now.

murasaki · 13/05/2026 13:02

Can you check and see which end of the scale they'd prefer? Good luck with the assignment!

PoppinjayPolly · 13/05/2026 13:03

Would it not be best to ask your course tutor/supervisor to make sure?
or whoever told you to do differently from the original word count?

ThisStateOfIndependenceShallBe · 13/05/2026 13:11

Hi, thanks for your all your help.

Those word counts are in the assessment guidelines.

There are factors affecting whether the upper or lower word count is more appropriate.

I think I should be aiming towards the upper word count.

I do have a tutorial this afternoon so can check then, just had a bit of a panic just now.

Thank you!

How did you get on @ThisStateOfIndependenceShallBe ? Sorted? 🤞

ThisStateOfIndependenceShallBe · 13/05/2026 18:38

Yes, sorted, thanks @PoppinjayPolly

My tutor said I should submit around 3500 words

I just wanted to work out the word count before I saw her because I was working on the assignment and wasn't sure if I needed to write more or edit what I'd already done.
