Concern about reported horrific animal welfare abuses at Greater Manchester abattoir

DISCLAIMER- References to abuse of cattle

I'm not sure if anyone has been following the news about the activities taking place inside Hartshead Abbatoir in Mossey, Manchester but there has been horrific abuse of animals that was filmed by a chap called Joey Carbstrong - this is his FB page https://www.facebook.com/share/p/18n6kSu1ri/

The cows in question were slaughtered under the Kosher guidelines which requires animals to be slaughtered without pre stunning. Their throats were cut with a knife using multiple cuts whilst conscious and heavily restrained. All of the cows were fully conscious whilst being dragged out of the slaughter box, by way of a chain around a back leg and whilst heavily bleeding out were hoisted into the air where they writhed in agony whilst they were systematically dismembered whilst fully conscious. Some cows whilst being pulled out of the slaughter box were caught on the metal by their gaping neck wound further exacerbating their agony. These cows were kicked in the head in an attempt to free them and when this couldn't be achieved they were decapitated slowly with a knife, again using several cuts.

The cows behind them were desperately trying to escape their fate and the screaming of the cows being decapitated was heartbreaking.

Please exercise EXTREME caution if you choose to watch the video contained within the link above. There is a censored version which might be 'better' to watch.

Please, if anyone could sign the petition to try and stop this horrific abuse it would be most appreciated. The link to the petition is below:

Please share the links on your socials. We need this to gather traction. The BBC are involved as are some other media outlets. Thank you to Joey for bringing this to our attention.

Awful 😰

Could you please share a full link for the petition? I (and a lot of people I think) don't like clicking on links when it's not clear what will open.

(I'd also suggest adding the cautionary note about the Facebook page above the link for that)

OverlyFragrant · 13/05/2026 11:58

The link to the Facebook page is broken.

But generally, yes thats what happens in religious slaughter. Animals suffer horrifying deaths.

DrPrunesqualer · 13/05/2026 12:18

It should be shut down immediately
and all non stun slaughter banned

Any imported non stun slaughter food products should be labelled in big letters.

Make people aware so they can chose not to buy it

Personally I’d ban its import too.

It popped up on my Facebook page.
you don’t see what happens as you need to click on the video.
That is assuming it’s the same post.

I’ve seen it once. I haven’t clicked on OPs link to watch again.
It’s a truly horrific, disgusting practice and I think people who work in these places become desensitised. Hence further abuse

mydogisthebest · 13/05/2026 12:42

I have never understood who could work in an abbatoir no matter how desperate for money.

MyThreeWords · 13/05/2026 12:43

This sounds horrific but I have heard many similar accounts of abuse and distress where the animals were allegedly, but ineffectively stunned.

My first thought when people focus on stunning/non-stunning among all the horrible abuses in slaughter-houses (and in meat production generally) is that their concerns are a pretext for hostility to a faith.

I care about the animals. I don’t give a toss about people’s faith and nor do most people.

Sapphireandsteel2 · 13/05/2026 12:46

It's terrible. I have signed the petition which is on Change.org.

MargoisanA1arsehole · 13/05/2026 13:07

Signed.

Exactly this.
Each to their own, faith wise.
But cruelty in its name is inexcusable, in my book.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/05/2026 13:12

I can’t watch the videos. It’s disgusting though. The abattoir should be shut down and stricter controls placed on other abattoirs.

Gonnagetgoingreturnsagain · 13/05/2026 13:12

Signed petition

PeoniesAreMyFavouriteFlowers · 13/05/2026 14:04

So sick and tired of human beings and their brutality.

HangryBrickShark · 13/05/2026 20:37

It's nothing to do with religion. But everything to do with a humane ending.

Thank you for highlighting this. These poor souls do not belong on kitchen tables, in hamburgers or in sandwiches. Awful industry.

Petitions are just virtue signalling. Waste of time.

Not true

Change.org petitions can and do make a difference,

with over 100,000 petitions having achieved their goals by influencing decision-makers, raising awareness, and mobilising support. While not legally binding, they serve as powerful tools for public pressure, particularly when paired with media attention or strategic campaigning. 1, 2, 3, 4, 5]

How They Make a Difference
Influencing Decision-Makers: High-signature petitions can pressure companies, local councils, and politicians to change policies, as seen with the saving of local businesses or influencing corporate policies (e.g., Sallie Mae changing its fee policy).

Raising Awareness: They often highlight overlooked issues, shifting public opinion and bringing topics onto the agenda of government and media.

Achieving Victories: Victories range from hyper-local (saving a local park) to national (changing laws or holding officials accountable). 1, 2, 3]

Factors in Success
Targeted Goals: Petitions with clear, actionable demands are more effective than vague ones.

Virality: The top ~1% of petitions that go viral typically yield the most significant results.

Media and Strategy: Petitions that gain mainstream media attention or are supported by other actions (like calling representatives) are more likely to succeed
