Should I write to neighbours or report persistent dog barking?

I've posted about this before but got to the point where I have to take action for my sanity.

Since I've moved here, next doors dog barks every day without a break of more than ten mins sometimes and this is usually all morning into the afternoon/evening. The neighbours are home when it's barking and just have not trained the dog. They shout when it barks which doesn't make a blind bit of notice. I don't want to speak to them in person. She shouts a lot and can seem aggressive. I can either go straight to the council to report the noise or put a letter through their letterbox in the first instance to explain that I will go to the council if they don't take action about the barking. Which should I do? The stupid thing is they let the dog sit in the window (I can see it from my bay window) and it barks at everything. Passing cars, people, animals, deliveries. It's a nightmare.

Jeez, how the fuck can they live with that?? I’ve got a noisy dog but I get him in from the garden when he barks and I’ve put shutters at my front room window so he can’t bark at everything going past.

Just go to the council, you’ll have to keep a diary but they can’t possibly not know there’s an issue.

MissMoneyFairy · 13/05/2026 10:36

Record it and keep a diary

Carlie97 · 13/05/2026 10:44

What I think is that the Council's initial letter to them won't include simple suggestions of keeping the dog out of the window or getting a trainer in and in my drafter letter I've included those things. I'd hoped they'd thought of them themselves. Surely no one is that stupid not to have? I don't know if they just can't be arsed? It's making me feel suicidal if I'm honest and trapped here (I won't act on those suicidal thoughts).9

Contact the council.
A dog owner that can tolerate and let that carry on is not being responsible.
I put in about a neighbours dog.
I got a form to report the barking..time and possible triggers.
I wouldnt do a letter because that will probably be ignored
Where anrecord of the barking is and can be noted by council.

Carlie97 · 13/05/2026 11:23

Thanks everyone. I will log a complaint with the council. I do genuinely wonder why they don't block the dogs access to the window as anything and everything going past makes her bark. The dog also doesn't get walked. The dog does seem to bark at anything and they haven't trained it out of barking. Why? This frustrates me so much. I don't have dogs because I couldn't commit the time they need to thrive, but I do know that the dog barking so much must be an indication of the dog being anxious. They're failing it.

I feel like going and screaming why don't you train the dog either yourselves or professionally and get that dog out of the window. Absolute twats. This is my log from this morning;
10.12am
10.16am
10.19am
10.21am
10.37am
10.42am
10.43am
11.12am
11.14am
11.18am
11.20am
11.21am shouting from human at dog
11.25am
11.26am shouting from human at dog

The last time the human shouted when the dog barked, she screamed, 'why can't I have my fucking dinner in peace?'

I've reported it and should hear back within a week or so from the council

I admire your huge restraint in not screaming back "because your too fucking lazy to train your dog" 😂

NattyKnitter116 · 13/05/2026 17:48

Sounds like you’d be doing the woman a favour as she’s clearly not coping well with the dog for whatever reason.

We have neighbours with a small yappy dog and they’ve recently added another one which of course barks with the first one. I don’t mind the odd bit of barking - but these dogs are put out at 11 pm most nights then left for 20 mins and they bark non stop. I can put headphones on but I do worry about those dogs and their anxiety levels. It can’t be good for them.

Are you renting?

Summer26 · 13/05/2026 18:16

@fundamentallyauthentic does it make a difference?

Yes, because if you’re a homeowner then I don’t recommend reporting because you will have to declare this on the TA6 form (by law). But not a problem if it’s truly your forever home.

IK had an issue with a neighbours dog.

Long story but I was aware of TA6 however could no longer ignore it.

I hit it with everything

It was sorted

By the time I came to sell the house the dog was long gone.

Just a little update. I reported the neighbours and it's been very quiet since. There's the odd bark but they close that barking down very quickly. They obviously knew how to stop the barking but couldn't be arsed. Twats.

I find it hard to imagine that many 'problem' dog owners dont realise that sooner or later they will get a complaint and action taken against them.

If they dont then they clearly have 'issues' that need to be adressed

You're right.

Saturday and Sunday were sooo quiet. There were a few barks through the day but they were shut down immediately by the neighbours. They obviously know how to keep the dog quiet, they have chosen not to for the past ten months for whatever reason. I wondered if it was because the council had been in contact so quickly.

Today, however has been quite a nightmare. This morning there was persistent barking, but nothing too bad. Certainly less than usual. I went out and came back around 4.30pm and since then there's been barking all the bloody time with intervals of five or ten minutes between each barking session. If they kept the dog quiet all Saturday and Sunday, why can't they do that now? I'm really at a loss and my mental health is so poor. I'm constantly on edge and feel so trapped.

Have they gone out and left the dog home alone?

Hi, no they're in the whole time the dog is barking.

Last night was particularly bad. Barking with barely a break from 4.30pm until almost 9pm. I almost went round to ask what the issue was but I thought as I'd already logged my complaint with the council to leave it. If it's bad again tonight or for the next few days shall I go round or just leave it to the council now?
