Could someone explain what is meant by the Muslim vote?

Could someone explain the "Muslim Vote" to me? I regard myself as an agnostic person with a Christian heritage. I respect people's right to believe or not. To attend a place of worship or not. I think we have that in this country. So why is the "Muslim Vote" a thing.

Currently Muslim communities are voting for candidates they believe to be sympathetic towards Palenstine (and against Israel?). It's nothing to do with the right to practice their religion, and of course it won't be all individuals within those communities, but enough to be swaying some election results.

I’ve never come across this. In what context have you heard it said?

thatstrangebox · 12/05/2026 00:20

Not sure it's any different to "the pensioner vote" or "the working class vote" - it's just a way of generalising about how people in a particular demographic may be voting. Right now "the Muslim vote" is talked about a lot because of candidates like the Gaza independents, I think. I imagine there are a few in the Labour party bemoaning having "lost the Muslim vote" in some areas, and other parties talking about how they might win it.

Some parties are winning it aren’t they? Anyone with anti semitic leaning candidates for a start. One party is investigating 30 of them but who knows how many there really are?

It's basically this

I find it weird to divide people into communities like that, but that's how people are classified when you look at separate voting blocks

@plims I'm amazed you've never heard of it, especially with what the elections have been like recently

ahh there it is, the old all muslims are anti semitic trope

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 12/05/2026 09:02

@hkathyobviously not everyone but in this context - yes. Explain why George Galloway was elected then? On a support for Gaza ticket! Very much aimed at the Muslim vote and everyone commented on this at the time. A deliberate action by him. It’s hardly new that people target constituencies with religious groups and peddle to them what they want to hear. The Greens are doing it now. You are foolish if you think this isn’t happening.

PygmyOwl · 12/05/2026 09:25

It's not about religion as such OP, it's just a way of categorising a group of voters. All parties analyse voter patterns to see where their support is coming from and which groups they have lost or gained. Eg in the US, the typical Trump voter is a white male, but he'll also be interested in his performance rating among other groups like "the Hispanic vote".

MeetMeOnTheCorner · 13/05/2026 09:18

It’s not that difficult to analyse how some communities will think based on religion though. However it’s world events driving this, but it’s real.
