How to price items at a car boot sale?

We have had a massive sort out and have absolutely tons of items that are too good to go straight to a charity shop so we’ve decided as a family to go to a local car boot sale this weekend.

We’ve sorted everything and have many boxes of good quality books, children’s toys, household bric a brac, kitchen equipment you name it and I think we’ve got it!

So all good, however I have absolutely no idea how I should price these items for a car boot, for example does a nice living room lamp that’s in full working order ( from Marks & Spencer‘originally) go for £5 or 10 similarly cutlery, I have several sets of good quality cutlery, I’m thinking £5 a set but my husband thinks this is too much for a car boot, what’s the consensus? I know people will want to haggle a bit but I need ideas on starting prices.

Just check Craigs List or your local charity shop to get an idea.

I wouldn't put actual prices on anything, just know in your head what you want. Because if you misjudge and it's too high people won't stop.

lamp unless huge I'd go for £5. It's a buyers risk it works etc. sets of cutlery for £5 seem reasonable. People always haggle too.

And it also depends on what your aim is? Whenever I've done one it's to go home empty, so will sell middle range and get rid, dropping to lower towards the end of the day. Books no matter quality don't go for a lot. Think 50p to £1. Kids toys a couple of pound each etc.

Always price stuff higher then if you have to drop the price you don't lose too much. Books maybe sell 3 for 2? Or 3 for a fiver?

I gave up boot fairs when people wanted to pay 20p for a Nintendo game or 50p for designer shoes. Usually didn’t even make my pitch fee!
