Does anyone else feel uneasy when adults use playgrounds without children?

Am I the only one that hates when adults go to the playground without children? I know it’s a free world and they can go where they like but it makes me feel so uncomfortable. Like yesterday was sat in the local playground was only me and my kids and a group of 5 adults arrived with no kids, just makes me feel so uncomfortable. I realise im probably being unreasonable but I can’t be the only one that hates it

One time I decided to go to the park to look at the ducks whilst dd was at playgroup

I felt a twat and had to leave

That sounds like a park with ducks etc this was a children’s gated playground with only play equipment no grass no ducks.

My old urban area had so many problems with this that the city fenced off the playground and banned anyone over 18 from entering the fenced area without a child.

There were plenty of other parts of the park for adults to use.

It’s not even park of a park thats the joke, it’s on the corner of a main road theres no park around it just a children’s gated playground

Why? There’s always loads of people walking, jogging or just sitting watching the birds without kids or dogs at our local park, especially on a week day. It’s a completely normal thing to do?

Happyhappyzoozoo · 10/05/2026 22:12

I would be annoyed if they weren’t being mindful of kids or were monopolising the playground but as long as they were actually using the equipment like you described and not just skulking about it wouldn’t make me uncomfortable. Especially as they’re in a group.

mumofoneAloneandwell · 10/05/2026 22:13

Do you know what, a primary school near me had to put black netting around the gates as weird men would stare at the kids playing

People are awful

Well others have, definitely not teens. Some of them were in their 30s

So this wasn’t an isolated event; loads of grown adults in your area go to the park and play on the equipment?
This sounds really quite bizarre.
Is there something in the water round your way?
😁

Suretobeunsure · 10/05/2026 22:17

A group clearly playing and interacting with each other wouldn’t make me uncomfortable. Maybe a solo adult without kids just watching would though.

Whilst I personally wouldn’t go in if there were children there I have been known to go on the swings on a sunny summers evening when out for a stroll with DP. There is a whimsy in recapturing that innocent and youthful fun.

The equipment is free to use and open to the general public so they aren’t doing anything wrong. And in a world where you increasingly have to pay to be anywhere I can see why people are attracted to this kind of activity.

We take my dsd she has profound ld’s and likes the swings.

why can’t adults enjoy playing anyway? I often swing on the swing when I’m there with dsd, obviously not if kids want to play but we go when dc are in school

Rubyeagle · 10/05/2026 22:31

Aren’t they a bit big/heavy for some of the equipment. It’s weird, it’s bad enough around me when the older teens like over 16 hog the swings and then often throw the swing over and over the bar so nobody can use after them! Bastards.
We even have adult keep fit equipment to use but no the hog the children equipment.

hahabahbag · 10/05/2026 22:32

Btw many parks including ours has equipment design for adults to use, fitness type

TheKittenswithMittens · 10/05/2026 22:33

Particularly when they are smoking weed.

Hammy19 · 10/05/2026 22:34

If my daughter and I are out for a walk and we stumble across some swings that aren't being used then we'll always have a go. Nothing wrong with having a laugh and acting like kids for 5 minutes

She's 25 for context

This is regularly so I doubt they are all disabled

It’s a gated kids playground so you wouldnt walk along and stumble into them

I’ve seen those adult things but never in a playground, round here they are on the outside on the grass but this particular one doesnt have them at all it’s on a main road no adult fitness equipment, yes large groups of teens are also annoying especially when they graffiti over everything and sit at the top of the slides vaping so kids cant go down but I don’t expect to see adults with no kids.

We live close to a lovely big park (has children’s play areas but also a coffee shop, ice cream kiosk, ponds, botanic garden and so on) and I go on my own a lot to walk, sit on a bench and read or whatever. I teach so am off in the holidays when obviously lots of families go. I sometimes wonder if people think I am a weirdo for not having a child with me. I deliberately don’t go near the kids’ bits for this reason.

I used to walk my neighbour’s dog (they moved away) and that felt like more of a legit “reason” to be there!

I have experienced this too when I’ve been with my young children and have to agree with you OP

Yes me too and it’s weird as fuck for anyone over the age of 14 or so to be ‘playing’ on park equipment, and if it’s a grown man frankly I assume he’s there for nefarious reasons.

I also regularly witness grown adults trying to queue jump kids at places like the zoo. It’s pathetic

SandwichSuperstar · 10/05/2026 22:56

It's par for the course around here as all the play areas contain adult gym equipment.

You have serious issues

AAAaaaaaaaaaaBbb · 10/05/2026 23:02

For the people being deliberately obtuse it’s not part of a larger park with grass, ducks, cafes or ice cream vans, it’s literally a gated playground attached to the back of a primary school, on a main road opposite a row of shops. There’s no grass surrounding it. A main road surrounds it. I will have to do a diagram soon 🤣

The only time I encountered a child free adult in a playground was when an entitled twat had taken his dog in to play in the children's paddling pool. As you can imagine he wasn't very receptive to me pointing out that dogs weren't allowed in.
