Any suggestions for a 12 year old with dandruff?

My 12 year old has pretty terrible, persistent dandruff. She has sensitive skin and her head is often dry and itchy. I’ve tried head and shoulders (various different kinds) and body shop ginger shampoo but neither have really touched it. She’s getting self conscious about it.

Any suggestions would be most appreciated!

I suffer with itchy and flakey scalp. I use Suu balm spray (you can get it on Amazon). I put it on at night and let it soak in then rinse in the morning. Works really well after the 2nd go.

Nizoral

Definitely not head and shoulders, it’s not good for your scalp at all.

How often is she washing her hair now? Best thing you can do is wash it very little. Once or twice a week at the absolute most. You need the natural oils to restore the balance on your scalp.

Is she brushing her hair and if so what type of brush? A soft bristle brush helps as the scalp needs to be brushed not just hair

Not a hair product, but cutting out dairy is worth a shot for a week or two to see if that’s the cause.

Neutrogena or Nizoral. They are not for daily use but for episodic treatment, and then Head and Shoulders can be used in between. we have Neutrogena and it works brilliantly, it should clear it up after about 3 treatments.

Another vote for trying Nizoral shampoo, you buy it at the chemist for 12 year old upwards. It controls the fungus which has often got out of hand in cases of bad dandruff.

Head & Shoulders also has a milder anti fungal treatment which should keep it away once under control.

Make sure she washes daily - infrequent shampooing accelerates cell turnover - resulting in flakes. Washing hair over a bath instead of a shower is also worth trying because it’s much easier to get the scalp properly clean, especially if she has thick hair.

Nizoral

Is she drying her hair properly. I thought dd had dandruff but it was actually a fungal infection that was thriving in slightly damp hair.

I meant Neurrogena T-Gel, sorry.
