What is something you know because of your job, that would surprise others? (My example is gross, thread warning!)

It can be anything!!

I will start..

I am a food safety inspector (local authority) and have been for over 15 years, working in two large cities, and my current job in a smaller local authority. The same theme...

Food handlers do NOT wash their hands properly after using the toilet / before preparing your food.. lack of antibacterial soap in a toilet cubicle or in a kitchen is common place.... even when I am there, hands are not washed, it is an absolute bug bear of mine.

Preparing with raw meat then handling food ready to eat.. not uncommon

Handling cash / touching screens then handling food.. not uncommon.

Yes it does put me off eating outside of my house unfortunately 🙃

I have come across a LOT worse but this example irritates me.

Your turn!!!!!

I know someone who works at KFC & apparently the food storage practices there can be really shocking! She still eats it though!

Happened with pupils at my first school when I was a probationer/NQT. They also used Mars Bars wrappers.

I’ve heard a Twix wrapper…

Since self checkouts became a thing I reckon everyone knows that one!

Got to be 10+ years since I've had one . Vile things .

Boring but it surprises all the new starters - Greggs apply butter/sauces to sandwiches with spatulas not knives (and yes, some shocking hand hygiene...not washing hands after taking rubbish out to bins in rat-infested service yard 😱 I do always try to call it out if I see it!)

Edited

I used to really like M&S sandwiches until I saw a documentary which included them being made (it was a general food programme without any criticism of M&S). The whole conveyor belt thing with people pressing down on the filled sandwiches with their hands just put me off completely!

And yet the millions of customers who eat a Greggs product every day seem to somehow survive.

I had horrible food poisoning after eating a cheese and bacon pastry from Greggs. I suspect it had spent far too long under the warm lamps, possibly along with some lovely bacteria from someone who didn't was their hands. I survived but will never go back!

What medicines does this refer to? Like Clarityn vs supermarket own brand?

That's one example. Or if the pharmacist offers me generic antibiotics I always ask for the brand. It can cost a bit more but it's worth it for me.

Is Egypt particularly renowned for training top cardiologists?

Yes, Magi/Mahdi Yakoub saved my newborn mate in 1974, congenital heart defects (multiple), no British doctor would touch her.

Former benefit assessor - sweet little old ladies are the absolute worst for lying about their income and savings.

'Oh that's my husbands money - aye doll, but your husband died 15 years ago 😆.'

I don't think the post you've quoted was judgemental at all. Fungating cancers are a very memorable sight and smell (the poor woman with one I encountered early in my career will also stick with me for life), but we know it's no fault of the poor person suffering the disease. Cancer sucks, and fungating lesions are something I wouldn't wish on my worst enemy.

I'm in theatres now, and I can eyeball how much blood a person has lost from the colour of the swabs and (in thankfully rare occasions) puddles on the floor.

Because of the comments about not seeking medical treatment because of fear or embarrassment.

Greggs don't have heat lamps to avoid VAT on keeping the food warm. They use the straight from the oven to the counter and use within 2 hours rule. Perhaps as you say it had been sat there for more than 2 hours but it certainly wouldn't be under hot lamps (Perhaps if it was the food would be nicer!)

It was in the warm glass thing on the counter next to the till, whatever that is. Where they keep the hot food.

Absolutely agree with this.

Also, it is very possible (and not overly rare) to claim £75k+ in benefits. Especially now that the two child limit is lifted.

When men get old, a surprisingly large number of them their penis almost disappears. As in , even to get it over the rim of a urine bottle is almost impossible, we’re talking 1-2cm

Public infrastructure funding (flood defences): the most and least deprived wards in England are only 3 miles apart.

(It’s been over a decade since I had to use these raw stats, the bottom position may have changed, but I’m pretty sure the top position remains the same).

Are they in london or sheffield?

When I was a student I did some shifts in a factory that produced the layered pasta salads for M&S. Conveyor belt with each person dolloping on a layer. I did the final bit, the ladle of salad dressing. We weren't allowed to stop so if I dropped the ladle on the floor I just got yelled at to pick it straight up and carry on. I've never bought a pasta salad from M&S since.

You know how, when you graduate from uni, your name gets called out and you go up on stage and shake the hand of the vice-chancellor?

At Cambridge, that doesn’t happen. Your name gets called out, followed by the names of four other people, and you all take about five steps forward and each hold one of the vice-chancellor’s fingers. That’s it. Graduation over.

That'd be hilarious if it wasn't so horribly dismissive of the students 😔

If it was post 2010 then the cabinet won't be warm, but the lights may give off the impression it is as they have an orange glow about them.

honeylulu · 12/05/2026 08:41

A law firm I used to work for had a specialist employment law department. The firm was terrible and broke so many employment laws like "making someone redundant" while on maternity leave or for asking to go PT on return from ML, then immediately recruiting for the same job. Not the absolute worst I've seen but really pretty bad considering. I think they just took a gamble that increasing their profit was worth the risk of a tribunal, which most people don't have the stomach for.

The counter wouldn't be hot then because holding hot food in a heated counter attracts VAT

Just looked it up as felt like I was going mad. In some franchised locations like motorway services (which this was, en route from Bath to Brentwood) they still have the hot cabinets

Blimey @MargotJane, didn’t realise they’d employ ‘teachers’ with no qualifications at all! Assumed all would have degrees at least!

All Information sent from government departments (websites, letters, emails) is aimed at a reading age of 9-11. (Writing this stuff is my job).

We don’t always get it right, but we try really hard to explain everything in a way that most people can understand.

I have sctually noticed this on govt websites.

WhatTheHellsGoingOn · 12/05/2026 04:15

That’s really interesting, I wonder why

I think for those of us with ADHD it makes sense. Lots of energy, not good at sitting still, short attention span… I’ve tried working in jobs which involve sitting at a desk in an office and it was not suitable for me at all. I also can’t work on long/extended projects or anything involving lots of reading/writing/thinking (I can’t speak for anyone else with ADHD but that’s how it is for me). Also loud music and flashing disco lights are right up my street 😂

I don’t have autism so can’t speak for why the job is attractive/suitable for people with ASC, but there are certainly quite a lot in the industry.

But something that might be relevant is that we don’t really have to be sociable in a ‘normal’ way. Although we chat to participants before and after class, most of our interaction with them is us standing at the front and giving instruction- it‘s like a persona; a performance.

Also, for some people anatomy and physiology is a special interest so they will retain a lot of knowledge about which muscles are being worked etc and will want to share that information.
