Seems to be wild with election fever but we seemingly didn’t have an election or it completely bypassed me (it could have I’ve been Intensely stressed) DH said should we have voted. I said no. None of my colleagues mentioned it or friends or family.

So assuming I didn’t miss it, can someone explain who voted and why and why we didn’t.

Local council elections tend to be every 3 years. We didn't have to vote because our next one is in 2027.

People in areas having elections voted, those living in areas not having elections didn't

Google will tell you which one you live in

right we did not but the neighbouring council did and now is a reform majority 😭🤦‍♀️

One of the most deprived in the UK

This is the map of elections in England on Thursday, hardly anyone was voting.

Scotland and Wales both had elections for their respective parliaments.

So although hardly anyone in England was voting, I would expect quite a lot of people in Scotland and Wales did.

No, we apparently had something last year instead and i will have voted then and no-one has done me out of any part of the democratic process.

I’m so disillusioned I feel like I am living in a dystopia envisaged in 1997 when I was 17. I cried when brexit happened and when trump got in the first time and since then nothing has surprised me. I think big tech and the “algorithm” is a scary thing that manipulates people subconsciously to create a conscious bias.

I haven’t got my thoughts full formed. And I now feel that there is a sense of hopelessness

there is a huge education gulf between the educated and the masses now. I teach and reading is something few can do well and be informed. And to a great extent tech has taken over thinking.

No. There’s 317 local authorities in England, and only 136 had elections on Thursday, plus the elections in Wales and Scotland. My local council elections are next year. I’m not actually sure why they don’t do them all at once!

There's been a lot of coverage because of the Scottish and Wales parliamentary elections, and because Starmer was doing so badly in the polls and in the results.

You could have checked by googling ‘my council name’ and elections and your council website would have confirmed if there were. Plus, assuming you are on the electoral register, you would have got poll cards through the door with the date and the location of your polling station , plus campaign leaflets.

if you’re not sure if you’re on the electoral register, now would be the time to check before the next set of council elections!

I’m intrigued by your comment about living in a dystopia envisioned in 1997 - that was when Blair became prime minister after nearly two years of a Conservative government, and most people felt very optimistic at that point, especially people our age ( I’m a couple of years older than you).

I do agree that technology has damaged people’s ability to think critically, and at least when most people saw the news on TV or read a paper, you could be reasonably sure the information was correct, if presented leaning a particular way. No controls like that on YouTube and TikTok etc

EllieQ · 10/05/2026 12:12

Two decades of conservative government, not two years! 🤦‍♀️

redboxerclub · 11/05/2026 20:56

I was optimistic in 1997 but the flip side of that optimism is dystopia. That dystopia is today’s reality. I cannot conceive I am considering solar to secure my energy consumption due to global conflict in Europe and Middle East.

Nope, none where we are in Devon. I think much of Cornwall was the same.
