Has anyone else heard of “crocodiles” being used to describe lining up in twos at school?

Learned something new today. Doing something at work involving editing a woman’s school memories during which she mentions looking back fondly on the teachers, the hymns they sang and the crocodiles. I thought WTF is that a typo for and then my colleague told me it’s a term for lining up two by two at school.

I'm 60 this year and that’s a new one on me. GrinConfused

Walking in a line. Usually school children. Round my way there are often crocodiles of nursery children heading off to the beach.

I'm with you OP!

The only crocodiles I know of in a school context are when we teach the greater than and less than symbols in Maths.

What's worse is I've been teaching for over 20 years and done loads of school trips both as a parent and teacher 🤨

Yes!

Crocodiles.

And I am Australian and we called it that!

At least you have the actual animals there, I wonder why it got into English/British schools and not something like an eel or a snake?

OP

60 this year and yes I know what it means.

Very old term. Didn't realise it was no longer used.

I think it clearly IS still used. Just never by me. Blush

It was used in my Dc’ S London state primary without any Enid Blyton reference, just as it was when I was at school.

For getting places when outside the school grounds.

Yep and I’m the same age more or less as you
