Do you know anyone over 100 years old?

Thinking about David Attenborough today,( happy birthday to him! ) I have only ever met one person over 100 years old. She was a friend of my mother-in-law‘s. A lady who lived independently but in sheltered accommodation. She’d had an interesting life and lived around the world but had never married or had a family. She had one niece who I think was in Canada. My mother-in-law who was about 30 years younger got chatting her at a needlework exhibition and they stayed friends. She left my mother-in-law a large tapestry in her Will.
I think possibly there’s a photograph somewhere of my elder son who is now 26 as a baby with this lady as I remember thinking at the time it would be an interesting thing to have a baby and a 100 year old person in the same photograph. I feel like I should go and dig it out now.
That’s it, just the one. I’ve been trying to think if any of my friends are very elderly relatives but can’t come up with anyone.

Met a man last year who was over 100 years old and part of the liberation of Dachau. Very interesting chap and still very sharp.

My mother has been researching family history and found a few of our ancestors lived to be over 100, one man even reached the age of 106! All that back in the days before modern medicine as well.

Sunisgettinganewhaton · 08/05/2026 10:28

Sadly not. But when I was 40 I started cleaning for a woman also 40....all 4 of her dgps were still alive and all over 100!! It quite blew my mind!!

BurnoutBee · 08/05/2026 10:28

My grandma was 104 when she died so I have known someone that old. She spent the final year of her life in a care home.

Floppyearedlab · 08/05/2026 10:28

Yes! A lady at church turned 100 just before Christmas. She lives in wardened housing and her carer brings her in.
I have another friend who is 98 and a half. He is in such good health that I am sure he will get there unless something unfortunate happens. He still swims 4 times a week, walks, lives alone (with help). He is brilliant.

TinDogTavern · 08/05/2026 10:31

My grandma lived to 101.

MissAmbrosia · 08/05/2026 10:35

My friend's mum is 103 and in fine fettle.

ArtemisNutella · 08/05/2026 10:40

I know someone who is 104. She is physically aged but mentally still fairly sharp. She has the most wonderful stories to tell! She lived through WW2 as a young woman. It astonishes me to think of the changes she has seen over her lifetime.

Choconuttolata · 08/05/2026 10:43

Yes my GMIL she is 101 and part of the Wind rush generation. Still dancing in church, she can sit cross legged.

The oldest person I have ever met was 103, he discharged himself from hospital stating that 'he didn't want to be around all these sick people'. He was sick and the other patients were 40-50 years younger than him!

I am now more convinced than ever that being old is impacted by your state of mind. If you don't see yourself as old, you don't restrict yourself from doing the very activities that keep you young.

My auntie is 102! And still has all her marbles. Lives in an annex at her daughter’s.

7238SM · 08/05/2026 10:45

My grandfathers uncle lived to be 104 and my own nan lived to be 102.

WildGarden · 08/05/2026 10:58

My Nan in Law lived to be 104. The last 10 years of her life were spent in a nursing home and were pretty miserable for her due to ill health.

upinaballoon · 08/05/2026 11:37

I know one who is alive and I knew one person who was well over 100 when she died. I had a distant relation who made it to 100 and maybe she didn't live much longer. Born? 1925, 1919ish and 186-.

Fifthtimelucky · 08/05/2026 11:45

No, but not far off. My oldest relative is 97 and still lives independently at home, mainly in good health.

Mossstitch · 08/05/2026 11:51

Met quite a few actually ( because worked in hospital for a couple of decades) oldest was 105. Saw a 102 year old doing her own shopping in one of our local shops, fully independent, did have a walking stick but she wasn't reliant on it. Best friends dad was 102 when he died. Surprisingly common whereas people talk as if we are all in a carehomes by 80s!

PashaMinaMio · 08/05/2026 11:57

My mum.
101 soon.
Lives independently, no carers.
Climbs stairs to her place.
Eats a lot of vegetables.

No dementia.
Sharp as a tack.

topsecretcyclist · 08/05/2026 12:55

No yet, but hopefully next year! My wonderful aunt is 98.5, she still lives independently, goes out and about on her own.

Gasp0deTheW0nderD0g · 08/05/2026 13:02

My grandma was three months short of her 100th birthday when she died. She'd been in a care home for a few years, increasingly frail and immobile, very deaf, but still had all her marbles.

Papyrophile · 08/05/2026 13:17

I was very young and have only a vague memory of him, but my DM's great-great uncle was Coventry's oldest citizen, at 108, in the early-1960s.

Glitterbiscuits · 08/05/2026 17:18

@PashaMinaMioHow lovely. I hope I’ll be the same.
Do you think it’s genetics or lifestyle or just luck?

My mother’s 96 soon, totally independent, walks a lot, does crosswords daily and is younger than quite a few of her friends.

LizzieW1969 · 08/05/2026 17:27

Not yet, but my aunt in Australia will be turning 100 next January.

HoldItAllTogether · 08/05/2026 17:29

My auntie is nearly 103. She is in a care home and is only recently started to get a little confused at times. She is frail and sleeps a lot. She is extremely miserable. She was resuscitated about 5 years ago following a stroke. Her children wish that she hadn’t been. Not for their sakes but for their mums.

ChiefCakeTestertoMaryBerry · 08/05/2026 17:30

I don’t but my friend’s grandma lived to be 104 and was still living in her own flat.

PizzaPowder · 08/05/2026 17:33

I knew a wonderful woman who answered the door to us on her 101st birthday. Just being around her made me happy

Becs258 · 08/05/2026 17:34

My Nan is 102, still lives on her own. Her mum lived to 100. She’s had enough now though. My Dad, her son, died in February and it’s too much for her.
