Is anyone following the Nottingham Inquiry?

I’ve just been watching some of the footage from this week. It’s quite shocking. Senior staff just trying to blame others and pass the buck for doing a really poor job and not taking action where there was clearly a high risk.

Anyone following? This inquiry is costing many many millions in taxpayers money so I thought there would be more interest.

No, I cannot say I am. On the basis of long experience I suspect it will end in a whitewash and recommendations that are not acted upon.

I am half following it. My dd was a student at Nottingham at the time it happened, she was actually living on the street where the two students got stabbed. It could have so easily have been her and I am so sad for the families of the students and those affected. It’s just absolutely horrible to think it could have been avoided by people taking more responsibility and taking more pro active steps to section him earlier. I think the biggest worry is that there are bound to be many, many more people like this who are out in the community who shouldn’t be. My own Mum had schizophrenia and was sectioned many times but this was in the 80s and 90s before the focus became more care in the community- which is obviously good for some and not for others.

I’ve been following it a bit. It’s incredibly depressing. And as someone else said, in all likelihood nothing will materially change. Those poor families

What you on about?

No. Too close to home. My son was a student at uni of Nottingham at the time. He was at the same nightclub as the 2 murdered students that night and lived in the next street along. He happened to get an uber home with his housemate as her feet hurt. Otherwise, they’d have been walking the same route at the same time.

It’s depressing to hear how avoidable this was.

Yes I have OP. I have two dc who were the same age as Grace and Barnaby when they were killed. I think they were all failed, even the killer himself. He should’ve been locked away a long long time before the inevitable happened. The powers that be really do have blood on their hands. I feel sorry for Ian’s family too they were treated like second class citizens.

The cynic in me wonders if Barnaby and Graces parents hadn’t been from wealthy well educated backgrounds we would’ve seen half as much interest in the case as we have. Don’t get me wrong I have the upmost empathy and respect for them when I say that.

I'm half following, but there's a lot to keep up with. I don't think a lot of the people involved assumed the parents of both young victims would just hush and go away, or be so wracked with grief they wouldn't put up a fight and hold anyone accountable. I am full of admiration for them.

I am old enough to remember when care in the community was the new big (cost-cutting) thing and, as a PP said, it's not not suitable in all cases.

Luddite26 · 08/05/2026 14:35

Ian Coates was also killed. Very tragic for all the families concerned. And a failing mental health service.

Seniie · 08/05/2026 15:43

The doctors and psychiatrist are just trying to blame one another and are coming across really badly.

Yes I am watching. So many people at fault. It is a broken system and it will be a year until the report is out and then how long after until any recommendations are taken up? I admire the families greatly for managing to get this inquiry. The Duty of Candour law can't come soon enough.
