Best option for my 13-year-old wanting to remove leg hair

DD 13 is keen to remove the hair on her legs. It’s just blonde fluff but I don’t want to say no, I remember not being allowed to shave at that age and doing it secretly.

What way do you reckon is best? I was thinking maybe hair removal cream?

My daughter epilates. She isn’t very hairy so doesn’t have to do it very often.

My mum took me for my first wax at that age. Half leg. It didn’t grow back for ages.
Try not to make a fuss of it being painful.

I’d avoid horrible hair removal cream and shaving, just makes it grow back dark and spikey.

If you do go down the epilating route, make sure she knows you have to exfoliate your legs very thoroughly and regularly to avoid lots of ingrowing hairs.

My dd's shave, dd1 started around that age. Dd2 start of year 7 but she's v fair skinned and has v dark hair. Wilkinson sword quarto razor's have little guards to prevent cuts.

Cream is messy. I've never been able to wax myself (tried more times than I can remember) and had far too many 'waxing incidents' to suggest it to dd's. Can't afford to go to a salon regularly. I have used an epilator myself for many years but they are not cheap if DC don't like it.

Also show her how to shave, make sure she changes the razor regularly. Use shaving cream. We get one from Tesco for £1.50 ISH. Much better than her 'borrowing' another family members razor and cutting herself or thinking it needs to be hidden.

Either an electric razor - complete safe- or a Venus razor.

do not let her use a cheap bic disposabal. I forgot my Venus and cut myself to ribbons!!

Don’t bother with the cream

NorthFacingGardener · 07/05/2026 21:57

I would go for shaving.

My DM recommended hair removal cream when I was that age but I think it’s far more dangerous personally... it can burn your skin. And you run the risk of accidentally smearing it on your eyebrows.

@DeathMetalMum- perfect. Have just added these to my weekly shop for my Y7 daughter

My DD took matters into her own hands and pinched my razor..and shaved thighs as well as lower legs! So definitely worth avoiding that... These days she epilates or shaves - cream stinks and is so much hassle. Whilst you don't want to stop your daughter, it's worth telling her that the blonde fluff can be preferable to darker stubble caused by shaving, but we were all young once and no way would I have listened!

I am very grateful to my mother who waxed my legs for the first few years (very pale skin and very thick dark hair) and then I moved onto an epilator. My hair is a lot thinner and I have a lot of bald patches!

luckily for DD she didn’t inherit my hairiness but I did discourage shaving. She even epilates her arm pits…

My 10 year old is half Cypriot and has recently asked to remove the hair on her legs, I got her some hair removal cream and it’s worked really well. Not sure it’s a long term solution as it’s faff but it’s done the job x

Latenightreader · 08/05/2026 09:11

I used hair removal cream at that age, then moved on to shaving. I hated the electric razor - I find they hurt. I've used wax but didn't like that at all (although hot wax was better than the strips).

Gealach · 08/05/2026 09:12

I don’t think she’d have enough hair to wax.

good shout on the epilator - at least it will eventually thin out the hair.

DD is 12, last night she nonchalantly but deliberately said she has hairy legs, I said, yeah me too sometimes, does it bother you having hairy legs? She said yes and she wanted the hair gone so I showed her how to use my electric razor. This morning I’ve picked her up her own. It’s not a big deal, better that she is shown her to do it safely and without cutting herself to ribbons, she also has very sensitive eczema prone skin particularly around the back of her knees so I took the opportunity to tell her she needed to be very careful with hair removal cream and to make sure if she ever decides to try it to do a proper skin test on a small bit first.
