Baby had his 1 year MMR & 1st dose chicken pox vaccine a week ago and now has a temperature of 39.8 in one arm and 38.9 in the other arm. Temperature hasn’t come down much with calpol. Also had some rapid breathing when asleep. Should we go to A&E or let him sleep it off and see how he is in the morning?

How long ago did he have calpol? If its been an hour since calpol, then give ibuprofen.

Children breath faster when they have a fever.

You know him best, if youre concerned ring 111

I would call 111 for advice if the temperature doesnt go down with calpol within 30 mins to an hour.

Call out of hours if worried. How about a cold flannel also and reassess x

I would be giving ibuprofen.works better for fevers. My daughter is prone to high fevers and was ill after all the jabs. If you’re worried though ring 111 for advice

Paeds nurse here.

When you say temperature hasn't come down much, how much is 'not much'?

How long ago did he have the Calpol, and has he had any ibuprofen?

I would give him some ibuprofen and check his temperature again in an hour, if it comes down then keep going with the Calpol/ibuprofen, if it's still not coming down then go and get him checked over. The actual numbers are less concerning than whether they respond to medication - some kids just consistently spike really high if they have a fever and there's no correlation between level of sickness and the number on the thermometer. My daughters temperature is either normal, or 39.9, no middle ground, even for just a mild viral illness. I've also seen septic patients with a temperature of 38.1

The quick breathing is likely because he's hot, as long as it's just fast and doesn't look like he's struggling to breathe, but I obviously can't see him and you know him best so if you're concerned then get him checked.

Thanks everyone. His temp has come down from 39.9 to 38.5 and 38.9 to 37.9, so I think we’ll keep him home tonight and let him try to sleep it off with calpol and neurofen. I’m pretty sure that if I called 111 they would tell us to go to A&E but only because that’s what they always say!
