What is older than you

On Monday I had a group of girls come to my door. They were selling bracelets they had made.

My carer opened the door and I said to buy one for me.

The cat decided to be her usual self and needed to inspect the new humans who all started fussing her.

My carer said tot he girls that although she is small she is actually 15.

One girl responded with, "That's older than me!"

So for a bit of fun who or what is older than you?

My house. My mother’s wedding ring. A painting my father did.

zurigo · 06/05/2026 10:10

Increasingly few things, which is utterly depressing!

But the table I'm working at (which is Victorian) and my Grandad's desk (age unknown, but I'd say it's maybe 1920s or 1930s?), which is next to me.

SmallIslandLife · 06/05/2026 10:16

A stripy beach towel that used to belong to my late parents. They bought it in the 1950s. It's still going strong and will likely end up with one of my DC one day.

-The Misuse of Drugs Act/war on drugs
-My sideboard

I have 15 year old cat too sash. He never lets the dog forget that he's "eldest in charge"

Purplecatshopaholic · 06/05/2026 10:27

My dads PhD thesis (ridiculous thing to keep but I guess it’s sentimental value, he’s been dead many years). A posh vase I don’t even like but I got it from my mums side of the family, lol - it’s ancient (and ugly). A sideboard.

KnickerlessParsons · 06/05/2026 10:27

A lot of our furniture which has been handed down by my parents

Ducklingfeet · 06/05/2026 10:30

My sewing machine (I was going to put that it was coming up to its centenery, but actually I just checked and it was bought in 1919!)

Cantthinkofanewusernameffs · 06/05/2026 10:31

A hand mirror.
My grandad made it for my grandma when they were courting.

My DCs, if asked, and I will die on that hill 😄

ReignOfError · 06/05/2026 10:40

My kitchen table and chairs - fast fashion in the 1950s - are one year older than me, and are going to outlast me.

A pair of 1940s stiletto peep-toe shoes which I picked up second hand in the 1970s - they’ve been re-soled once and I replaced the metal heel tips 25 years ago, but are otherwise original.

My husband. He’d prefer I harped less about that.

HippyChickMama · 06/05/2026 10:53

My early 70s Krups mixer, passed down by dgm and still going strong
My house, built the year the Titanic sank
My first car, alas no more, was a year older than me

redhatpurplehair · 06/05/2026 10:58

I struggled with this but I have a pair of Victorian decanters that were my GP wedding present. Which is quite concerning.

TerrorAustralis · 06/05/2026 10:59

The table I’m at.

My dad’s coin collection. There are coins in there older than anyone on Mumsnet, guaranteed.

MegMortimer · 06/05/2026 11:00

My late grandmother's bookcase which sits in my living room. And David Essex, he was lovely when he was young, still lovely now.

Catsandbooksaremybag · 06/05/2026 11:01

My teddy, bought for me by Mum before I was born, who lives on a chair in my bedroom.

My grandma's engagement ring that I wear.

My flat

My older siblings

My cooker (not really, it's just old and shite 😉)

GentleSheep · 06/05/2026 11:03

Most of my furniture, moka pot, and plates.

ifonly4 · 07/05/2026 10:30

Our bed. It's an iron/brass bed and my parents bought it as an antique for me when I was nine (fifty years ago).

Efrogwraig · 07/05/2026 20:27

The Pope. Just about.

FolioQuarto · 07/05/2026 20:32

I'm mid sixties for context.

One of my house plants.
Our everyday cutlery.
Our winter bedsheets.
My oven gloves.
My mixing bowl.
My piano.
The large stone we prop the kitchen door open with, it is about six million years older than me.

DreamingOfGeneHunt · 07/05/2026 20:32

My plates, cutlery, bedside table, wardrobe, living room chest of drawers; my sewing machine, my living room table, a lot of my books.
