Odd nicknames that seem stranger than the original names

Some nicknames are just odd. Personally I can't stand Saz as a short form of Sara(h) which is short enough not to need it. But it's logical I guess. Any strange examples?

My cousin’s husband was/is called Stan. Or so everyone thought. Including the travel agent from their local country area back in the 80s who organised flight tickets for him in that name.

Stan didn’t look at the tickets until the day he needed to fly.

The problem was his name, and the name on his passport, was actually John.

In my family we had/have
Ellen - Nellie
Winnifred - Biddy
Josephine - Jo (hates Josie)
Jean - Beany
Charlotte - Charlie
Margaret - Margie
John - Jonesie
Jake - Colgate (because he has perfect teeth,)

We have a Biddy but she's a Bridget (who was also likened to Queen Victoria as a baby).

Most of these are not nicknames though, they're diminutives.

i love this. Is it a really British thing that nicknames like this stick? I once saw a tweet from someone who had a friend who at school went on holiday to Morocco and when he got back gave a presentation to the class about it. He was forever known as Cous Cous.

I do too, I find that type of thing really funny. Just one off the cuff remark at school and that's your name forever now.

I saw something online about a man who was called Anthony and was quite short, everyone at work apparently called him Shetland (Tony-Shetland pony) 😆
